The Hunted (1948)

The Hunted (1948)

starring Preston Foster, Belita
directed by Jack Bernhard

84 minutes

Laura Mead (Belita) gets out of prison after serving 5 years on a trumped up charge. Police Lieutenant Johnny Saxon (Preson Foster), the police detective who arrested her was also her former lover. She gets a job at an ice rink teaching people how to skate and performing during breaks in the local ice hockey games.

Laura tries to stay on the straight and narrow. She comes the primes suspect after her former defense attorney is murdered, due to circumstantial evidence. Johnny is determined not to let his feelings for Laura get in the way of him doing his job. She feels as if she doesn't have a choice and makes a run for it. Johnny chases after her with the full force of the law behind him.

Thoughts

One of the more interesting aspects of this movie is the display of ice skating ability. It is limited to one scene/ Belita is the only one shown ice skating. Belita was a world class ice skater and competed in the Olympics in 1936 at the age of 12. She only has 13 appearances on screen according to IMDb.

Preston Foster was 48 and Belita was 25 when this movie was made. He was almost twice as old as ther. No mention is made (of course) of the age difference between the two characters.

The acting and dialogue didn't strike me as all that great. Maybe in the hands of better actors this could have been a better film. It does end fairly abruptly. It isn't awful but it also isn't great.

I saw this movie as part of the 2023 Noir City DC film festival.
