The Ordeal
(aka The Daleks - Part Six)
The Thal who was getting water has disappeared by the time Ian, Barbara, and the others get to the lake. They decide there is nothing they can do but keep going. They find some caves which they explore in the hopes of finding a way through to the other side of the mountains. Antodus, one of the Thals, starts to have doubts about going on. He tries to convince Ganatus to let him go back. Soon after that the route back gets cut off when some rocks fall obstructing that passage.
The Doctor, Susan, Alydon, and Dyoni look for a way into the city. The Doctor sends Alydon and Dyoni to check on the other Thals that are nearby. The Doctor sabotages some control panels he finds by short circuiting the wiring. He and Susan are getting ready to move on when three Daleks show up and take them prisoner. The Daleks reveal their plan to the Doctor and Susan to release radiation in the atmosphere.
Ian, Barbara, and the others discover that they must leap across a chasm in order to keep going. It is only a few feet across but the drop is tremendous. everyone makes it across safely except Antodus who slips and falls. He is attached by rope to Ian who does his best to keep himself from going over the edge as the episode ends.
This episode feels like it has a lot of padding in it. Probably two thirds of the episode is spent with Ian and Barbara. The cliffhanger was a literal cliffhanger but it wasn't terribly exciting. Once Antodus started to moan about wanting to go back I quickly developed a feeling that he wasn't going to survive until the end of the story.
