Broadchurch 1.07

Episode Seven

Alec wakes up in the hospital. Ellie is there. She's angry at him for not tellling her about his heart condition. She leaves him in the hospital but before long he checks himself out and heads back to work.

Ellie continues the questioning of Susan Wright, without Alec. She finally gets Susan to start opening up. Susan tells Ellie about her life before she moved to town. She also tells Ellie about how she saw something from the cliffs on the night of the murder and headed down to the beach.

Ellie pokes holes in Susan's story. Susan finally admits that she was on the beach and saw a boat come in to the beach. The man in the boat came ashore and dropped Danny's body off and then left. It takes some more prodding but she finally admits that it was Nige. She also explains that she thinks Nige is her son.

Nige is brought in for questioning Alec interrogates Nige. They find Susan's dog in Nige's backyard. Nige calls Mark to tell him that he's been arrested, before the questioning begins. Susan tells Ellie about Nige's threats. Nige explains that on the night of Danny's murder he was stealing pheasants from a rich man's estate. 

Mark and Beth go to see Paul Coates for counseling. Beth is unsure what to do about her pregnancy. He advises them to take it one day at a time.

Paul Coates gives Alec the hard drive that Tom Miller was smashing up in the previous episode. He tells Alec that Tom and Danny weren't best friends and that he once had to separate them because they were fighting.

Susan is given her dog back and let go. She is supposed to check in every night. Nige is also released but Ellie has someone follow him. Nige loses the man tailing him.

Alec talks to Maggie and Olly at the newspaper about Sandbrook, another case that he investigated. The killer was never caught. Alex explains that it was another police officer's fault, his wife. They aren't married anymore, she was having an affair at the time, but he still doesn't want her name dragged through the mud.

Chloe's boyfriend comes over for dinner and lets drop that Danny would sometimes hang out with him and Nige. 

Susan Wright leaves town after getting another threat from Nige.

Alec asks Ellie about Tom's computer. She goes home to look for it and can't find it. She gets into an argument with her husband.

The episode ends with Alec digging through the recovered data from Tom's computer. He finds something.

Thoughts

I'm starting to think that Mark may have had something to do with his son's death. It looks like Paul lied about Danny and Tom's friendship. It's either that or Ellie really doesn't know her son very well. I'm starting to wonder if there is some conspiracy that Alec has yet to learn about. I'm starting to wondr if even Beth knew something about her son's nocturnal activities and just acted surprised in this episode.

I'm ready to finish off this season. I doubt that all the pieces are going to fit together neatly. I don't love the show but I am undecided about watching the next two seasons. The first season is free to watch on Prime but the next two are not. I can get them from the library.
