A Jour Sans Pain
or A Day Without Bread
Most of the Jewish people at the school are hungry but a few of them have food which they refuse to share with the others. Judith Morhange is made the spokesperson for the the people being held at the school. She gets a chance to talk to Jules Bériot. He can't offer much in the way of support. He has problems of his own.
The gendarmes decide that they need to store some mechanical supplies in the basement of the school. The printing press is still there. Bériot is given three hours to get the place cleared out. He talks to Crémieux about it. Crémieux has problems of his own. He needs to get his wife out of town because she is Jewish and originally from Austria.
Doctor Larcher tries to get people to donate food for the Jewish people in the school, without much success. He finds out from Servier that Chassagne, the new head of the chamber of commerce, is after his job as mayor.
Marchetti and the other policemen continue to look for more Jewish people. They find quite a few. He arrests one woman and her mother who are from Germany. They have false papers that indicate they are Christians from Belgium. Marchetti is ready to charge them but ends up changing his mind and lets them go.
Judith works with the different groups within the people being held at the school. She gets some of them to donate money so that they can buy some food. Some people from the town also donate some food. She raises some more money from a French Doctor who wants to study the Jewish people and is willing to pay in order to take their measurements.
Anna Crémieux gets arrested by the police and taken to the school.
Daniel tells Sarah about someone with whom she can stay, on a farm, a few miles from Villeneuve.
Crémieux helps Bériot move the press. They get some help from a couple gendarmes who don't realize what they are helping them move. Crémieux and Bériot get stopped when they are heading home. It is after dark. They have another man in the vehicle with them. The other guy attacks a German soldier. Crémieux and Bériot take off running. The Germans open fire on them but they keep running.
Thoughts
Raymond Schwartz and Marie Germain do not appear in this episode. Jeanine Schwartz, Lucienne, and Hortense appear in this episode but don't play major roles.
This was another episode that I found difficult to watch. I can feel the tension building. I'm not sure what is coming but it isn't good. Seeing Judith Morhange (last episode) and now Anna Cremieux get taken to the school filled me with dread.
I am still on board with this show despite the heaviness of the tone. Presumably the situation at the school will get resolved for better or for worse in the sixth episode of this season. My hopes are not high for a good outcome.
