Moonlighting 2.02

The Lady in the Iron Mask

Maddie and David are hired by Barbara Wiley, a woman who hides her face behind a mask and has a raspy voice. She wants the Blue Moon Detective Agency to find a man who named Harbert who just got out of prison. He was locked up for throwing acid in her face years ago, just before she got married. Harbert claimed that he was in love with her.

David and Maddie argue about whether they should take the case. He thinks they should. She does not. He finally talks her into taking the case. They find Harbert working as a tour guide. He tells them to tell Barbara Wiley that they couldn't find him.

Harbert turns up dead the next day. Maddie and David suspect that Barbara Wiley might be the killer. They try to talk to her about the murder but she doesn't want to talk. They stakeout the hotel where she is staying. They follow her but then notice something different about her. They discover that the person they've been following, the one beneath the veil is not Barbara but her husband.

David and Maddie get into an argument. They return to the hotel separately. They are both disguised as Barbara. They both get the key to her room. Hilarity ensues.

Thoughts

There are parts of this episode that are cryptic and confusing and don't make sense to me. Why did Barbara Wiley dispose of the gun? Was it Barbara Wiley that disposed of the gun or her husband? Why did he kill Harbert? What happened at the end of the episode to resolve the case? The police showed up. Maddie, David, Barbara, and her husband all go sliding across a floor that is slick with soap bubbles but the next scene is set back in the offices of Blue Moon Detective Agency without anything in the way of explanation as to what happened in between the two scenes.

I enjoyed this episode quite a bit but I don't fully understand it. I like the mixture of detective story and humor. I liked the use of music. I like the tone of it. I'm not so sure about the moments of budding romance between David and Maddie. That part felt a little forced. That said this might be my favorite episode to date.
