Doctor Who (1963) 15.06.03

The Invasion of Time - Part Three

The Doctor explains to the Time Lords that the Vardans, the creatures who just materialized, are in charge now. The Doctor and Borusa meet in the Doctor's newly redecorated office. It is lined in lead which provides the barrier he needs to finally tell Borusa what's going on.

Leela and Rodan make their way out of the Citadel and into the wilderness that surrounds the city. They run into Andred as they are leaving the Citadel. They meet other people, savages, in the wilderness led by a man named Nesbin.

The Doctor speaks to Castellan Kelner and has him make a list of any Time Lords who might cause trouble. The Doctor then asks Kelner to have them rounded up and expelled from the Citadel. The Vardans express some doubt when it comes to the Doctor's plans but he explains that the expelled Time Lords won't stand a chance in the wilderness.

Rodan quickly learns how tough life is in the wilderness. She, unlike Leela, lacks the skills or the confidence to survive outside the Citadel.

Andred explains to one of the Time Lords, as he is about to get expelled from the Citadel, that he and some of his compatriots are planning to do something about Kelner and the Vardans. The first step in their plan is to deal with the President. The episode ends with Andred entering the TARDIS. He points his gun at the Doctor, who is also there and prepares to kill him.

Thoughts

Leela and the Doctor do not cross paths in this episode. Leela and Rodan get a few scenes together. I think this may be the only time during Leela's time on the show that she got to share this much screen time with another woman without someone else, usually the Doctor, present.

I really like the supporting cast in this story, they (Kelner, Rodan, Borusa, Nesbin) are all really good. A good guest cast can make all the difference in a story.

K-9 seems to really get around the Citadel in this episode. I wonder how he managed that without getting stopped by a guard somewhere along the way? Maybe he did get stopped and had to deal with them.

This story is still as good as my not so great memory of it, but the Sontarans still have yet to appear.
