Bottoms (2023)

Bottoms (2023)

starring Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri
directed by Emma Seligman

92 minutes

PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) lie about having spent time fighting for their lives in juvie, over the summer, and start a fight club for female students at their high school. They are hoping to get a chance to score with a couple of the cheerleaders. They find a teacher who is willing to be the group's faculty advisor and the club takes off.

The club is a success until one of the football players does a little digging and discovers the truth (about juvie and the reasons for starting the club). He shares it with the whole school. This creates a major setback for PJ and Josie.

Thoughts

This is the second film starring Rachel Sennott that was directed by Emma Seligman that I have seen. The other one was Shiva Baby (2020). Bottoms is considerably more over the top. I don't think I have seen any of the other actors in this movie before, other than Rachel Sennott.

They did a lot with a little in this movie. You never see more than about a dozen football players. Only two of them have names and speak more than a couple lines. The football players are almost always wearing their uniforms. The two football players who have speaking parts in the movie wear numbers 01 and 02 on their uniforms/ You only see one parent in this movie. She plays an important part in the arc of her daughter's involvement with the self-defense club. There is one teacher and the principal and one janitor, in terms of the staff of the school.

The end of this movie was ridiculously over the top but also restrained, see paragraph about doing a lot with a little. This was a lot of fun to watch but it also has some serious moments. Definitely worth my time.
