Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

starring Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles
directed, produced, and co-written by Roger Corman

72 minutes

Seymour Krelborn (Johnathan Haze) is about to get fired from his job at Mushnick's flower shop when he convinces Mr. Mushnick (Mel Welles), his boss, to give him one more chance. He brings in the unusual plant that he has been growing at home. He calls it the Audrey Junior. He named it after Audrey (Jackie Joseph), his coworker, on whom he has a crush.

The plant is carnivorous. He gets it to grow larger by feeding it some of his own blood. The plant grows and gets hungrier. Seymour accidentally kills a man and then feeds the body to the plant. It grows bigger. Mr. Mushnik finds out about it but isn't sure what to do. The plant is an attraction that brings in lots of new business.

The police eventually start to investigate the disappearance of a number of people. Seymour decides that he has to do something about the Audrey Junior.

Thoughts

This version of Little Shop of Horrors predates the musical. It is somewhere between horror and comedy but I think it is for the most part a comedy. This movie has a lot of good elements but the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts.

I have not seen the movie version of the musical only a stage production.

Jack Nicholson has a small role in this movie. He is probably the one actor in this movie that most people would recognize.

This movie is weird and funny but I would not call it great. It builds and builds and then ends very abruptly. I'm glad I have seen it but I don't see myself watching it again.
