Inuyasha 1.01

The Girl Who Overcame Time... and the Boy Who Was Just Overcome

Inuyasha, a young half demon, living hundreds of years in the past, is stopped by a young woman named Kikyo who shoots him in the shoulder with a magic arrow. Kikyo was wounded herself and dies from her wounds. She begs Kaede, her younger sister, to make sure that the Shikon Jewel, that Inuyasha was after, is burned along with her body.

Kagome, a 15-year-old girl, living in the late 20th century, is sucked down a well in a shrine and finds herself hundreds of years in the past. It is 50 years since Kikyo stopped Inuyasha. He is asleep and still attached to the tree by the arrow with which Kikyo shot him. He wakes up when he senses the presence of the Shikon Jewel.

Men from a village nearby show up and take Kagome away from Inuyasha, who remains attached to the tree. They take her back to the village where she meets Kaede, who remarks how much Kagome looks like Kikyo. Kagome is still in a state of disbelief as to what has happened and where she is.

A demon that is part centipede and part human attacks the village. It also attacked Kagome when she was falling through the well. She senses that it is after her and she runs away from the village. She winds up at the tree to which Inuyasha is attached by the magical arrow. He convinces her that their only chance for survival is for her to remove the magical arrow.

Before she removes the arrow the Shikon Jewel materializes. The Demon grabs it but once Inuyasha is free he kills the demon. Keade, gives the Shikon Jewel back to Kagome for safe keeping.

Thoughts

I've been aware of this show for a long time but this is the first time I have tried watching it. I have not read the manga. I am of course watching it Japanese with English subtitles.

I am watching this show on Netflix which has the series broken down into 6 seasons. According to my research the DVD set was broken down into four seasons. As I understand it the groupsing by seasons in both cases was done retroactively. There are 167 episodes available on Netflix. The episodes that are on Netflix ran from 2000 to 2004 on TV in Japan. There was a second series that ran from 2008 to 2010 but which is available (along with this series) on Hulu.

I'm not sure at this point about this show. It hasn't won me over yet but I also am not turned off by it. I am curious to see where it goes next and see how it develops. The supporting cast includes characters who do are not in this episode.
