Fear, and Other Smells
Red doesn't like the new meal program and she isn't alone. Everyone hates the new meals. DeMarco has found a way to deal with the favorless gruel, flavor packets from Ramen meals. Cindy and some of her friends have another way to avoid the new meals. They ask for the kosher meals.
Vause gets the backstory spotlight. She feels like Whitehill is watching her. She worries that Kubra, her old boss, has sent someone after her and she thinks that Whitehill might be that someone. Vause remembers how Fahri, one of her former colleagues, was killed on orders from Kubra. She saw it happen.
Doggett spends some time with Coates, one of the new correctional officers, outside of prison. They are supposed to be running an errand but they go to the doughnut shop where he used to work. He buys her some donuts. They feed the remains of the donuts to some ducks.
Daya is experiencing some lower back pain. Aleida gives her some advice but doesn't offer to help her. Delia comes to see Daya again. She lets slip the fact that Aleida asked for money. Daya doesn't want money and is angry to discover her mother's deal with Delia. She tells Delia the truth, that Mendez isn't the father. She was already pregnant when they had sex. She only wants what's best for the baby.
Sophia talks to her ex-wife on the phone about their son. Crystal is also concerned about how Michael is acting. Sophia talks to Mendoza about their sons and apologizes for being angry with her.
Soso goes to Healy. She wants to be transferred to Rogers. Healy claims that he can't do that and prescribes her medication to help her with her problems. She isn't happy about it but she accepts the prescription. Rogers later comes to see Healy and questions his course of action with Soso. He makes some very inappropriate comments about why Rogers thinks she would be able to do a better job with Soso. He ends the meeting by resentfully handing Soso's files over to Rogers.
Suzanne's story is getting more and more popular among the inmates. Poussey keeps pestering her for the new chapter. She isn't happy with the direction the story takes when a new chapter is finally released. Taystee finds her drunk, in a stairwell. She tries pushing her friend to go to AA. Poussey says she will but instead, much to Taystee's dismay, she joins Romano's circle.
Caputo tries talking Pearson into spending more instead of slashing all costs. Pearson lets drop that he is going to a meeting in Utica with the company's president. He takes Caputo's ideas to the meeting but they aren't accepted. There is some attempts at humor when the subjects of kosher meals is brought up. The humor gets one of the managers fired. Pearson walks away empty handed from the meeting which was led by his father, the president of the company. Pearson later finds out that Caputo left early for the day.
Chapman takes full control of the scheme to sneak used women's panties out of Litchfield. She buys up all the ramen noodles in the commissary. She offers samples of flavor packets to Boo, Yoga Jones, Morello, and Murphy. She wants them to wear the underwear in exchange for more flavor packets. She gives an inspired speech that sounds like something out of Shakespeare. She also flirts with Bayley, the baby-faced new CO, to get him to help them with the smuggling part.
Thoughts
Vause, once again, seems less in control than she has in the past. In the end it seems like, for once, her fears are justified.
Doggett's "date" with Coates has to be foreshadowing of something yet to come.
Does Suzanne's story have any more life or is it just a tool to push Poussey into Norma's circle? Hmmm...
The scene where Daya confessed to Delia was very moving. She had to know what the outcomes from that admission could be. I've got a feeling that Delia is going to come back and offer to take the child. I've also got a feeling that Bennett is going to return just as Daya is getting ready to hand off the child to Delia.
I found the reveal that Pearson's father owns the prison company to be very interesting. Caputo still doesn't know this. I wonder what fruit that reveal with bear.
Everything is going a little too smoothly for Chapman. I'm ready for it all to come crashing down. She needs to be taken down a notch.
I really like this episode. I like most of the things going on to varying degrees.
