We Can Be Heroes
Chapman starts to experience some trouble in the ranks of the inmates she has hired to provide her with used underwear. Flaca is the one who starts the trouble after she finds a pamphlet about unionizing that one of the COs threw away.
The guards are sick and tired of the short hours, low pay, and lack of benefits that they have been experiencing ever since the prison went private. They are having a meeting about it in the break room when Caputo walks in, to get some coffee. He tries giving them a pep talk but they don't want that, they want action.
Caputo gets the backstory spotlight. He is shown first as a high school student and then in the rest of the flashback scenes as an adult. The woman he married left him and was carrying another man's baby. She didn't want to get back together with Joe but he wanted to make it work. He quit the band and got a job in the prison system at Litchfield. She left him anyway in the end and ran off with his former band mate.
CO Donaldson starts getting all sorts of strange comments from the inmates who have been reading Suzanne's erotic story. He doesn't know what's going on until he gets his hand on the story. He takes it to Healy who uses it for his own purposes. He gets CO Rogers suspended over it because Suzanne said that it was Rogers who encouraged her to write.
All the inmates start giving Burset the cold shoulder because she gave Mendoza a black eye.
Vause approaches Whitehill about what she said about the NSA in the previous episode. Whitehill is spooked and worried about what Vause will do to her. Vause tells Whitehill that she's a double agent who works for the CIA and the NSA.
Chapman gets some advice from Red about how to solve the problem with her workers. Chapman takes the advice to heart and starts a scheme to deposit money in the participating inmates accounts. She fires Flaca from the group. Vause warns Chapman that she is in danger of getting her sentence extended if she gets caught. Chapman isn't interested in listening and Vause washes her hands of the matter.
Inmate Angie Rice gets let out of prison by mistake. Her ID number got mixed up with that of another prisoner with the same last name. She plays along and is dropped off at a bus station. It isn't until after she is gone that the mistake is discovered. Pearson doesn't know what to do. Caputo is ready to call the police but he goes after the missing inmate himself. He finds her still at the bus station drinking a soda. He talks her into returning with him.
Boo tries talking some sense into Doggett after she sees evidence that CO Coates has mistreated her friend. Doggett makes excuses and says that it wasn't his fault. Boo comes back and tries a different approach that finally gets through to Pennsatuckey.
The cult of Norma seems to flying high when word gets around that Rice has been freed from prison. Soso ruins the party when she busts into one of their meetings and calls out Leanne for treating her badly. Romano shrugs her shoulders and keeps her head down. Soso wakes up later that night, in one of the closing moments of the episode, and discovers that someone has cut off some of her hair. She sits up and sees Leanne staring at her.
Caputo joins the guards at a bar. They want him to lead them in demanding better treatment from corporate. He reluctantly agrees to do so without telling them that he's already demanded some changes from Pearson after he recovered Rice.
Thoughts
There's a lot to chew on in this episode.
I think my prediction about Chapman's scheme holds true. I also think that there's a good chance that she will get her jail term extended.
I think that the cult of Norma isn't going to last past the end of the season but I can't foresee exactly how that plot thread is going to wind up. Soso and Leanne are headed for some sort of conflict. I think that there will be blood drawn but I'm not sure how serious it is going to get or who is going to initiate the violence.
I'm not sure what's going to happen between Mendoza and Burset but something is going to happen.
The thrust of Caputo's arc in this episode seems to be to emphasize that he is only a good guy when it is in his best interests. I'm curious to see how things will wind up between he and Pearson. I've got a feeling that there are going to be some changes and that Pearson may not be around next season.
I was a little surprised that Coates didn't seem to get into any trouble for taking Rice to the bus station. There was a moment when it seemed like Caputo was ready to fire him. Maybe that moment is being saved for next episode.
There was still no sign of either Nichols or Bennett.
I like the humor in this episode. There were a number of moments that brought a smile to my face. I especially liked Vause's approach to dealing with Whitehill. Overall I thought this was a very good episode which kept me engaged and hungry for more.
