Doctor Who (1963) 1.02.01

The Dead Planet
(aka The Daleks - Part One)

The Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan step ouside to take a look around the area where they have landed. They don't notice that the radiation meter indicates high levels of radiation outside the TARDIS.

The Doctor and his companions take a look around but everything they see looks dead or petrified. They spot a city in the distance. The Doctor wants to investigate but Ian points out that it is getting dark. The Doctor reluctantly agrees to wait until the next morning.

Susan gets separated from the other briefly during their walk back to the TARDIS. She thinks that someone approached her and tapped her on the shoulder. The Doctor thinks she is being silly.

The Doctor seems to be the only one who wants to stay and look around. Ian talks him into leaving the unnamed planet but then the TARDIS breaks down. The next day they head to the city looking for some mercury, which is what is needed to repair the TARDIS.

The group splits up once they have reached the city. Ian starts to get worried when Barbara doesn't return on time. He suggests that they should go look for their missing friend.

Barbara tries to retrace her steps but finds walls where there used to be doorways. The episode ends with a probe closing in on Barbara as she starts to scream.

Thoughts

The Doctor calls Ian by his last name but gets it wrong, on more than one occasion. He keeps calling him Chesterfield instead of Chesterton.

Barbara seemed very ill at ease early in the episode. Her decision to explore the city on her own surprised me a bit. It seemed out of character for Barbara given how she had been acting up to that point.

There is no commentary track for this episode. There are only commentary tracks for three of installments in this story. I did watch the episode a second time with the info text subtitles turned on.

This is a good start to this seven-part story which is collectively known as The Daleks. Hopefully it keeps moving at a decent clip and doesn't start to feel padded.
