UFO Robo Grendizer 3.16

Maria in the Snow Storm

or Maria in the Blizzard
or La grande douleur (The great pain)

Zuril starts to build a new base of operations on Hokkaido, the northern most of the four large islands of Japan. He has his second in command, Kane, send out a saucer beast to wreck havoc. in the area around the mountain where the Vegan base is being built.

Danbei is on Hokkaido buying horses and spots the saucer beast. He rushes to get a message to the Space Science Center. The Vegans catch him and chase him through the snow. They abandon the chase when they think he was killed after falling off a cliff.

Duke Fleed, Kouji, Maria, and Hikaru rush to Hokkaido after Professor Umon relays Danbei's message to them. Hikaru searches for her father while the others search for the saucer beast. Hikaru finds her father. Kane (in a minifo) and Maria (in Drill Spazer) get into a duel. Both crash and Maria is stunned to see that the pilot of the minifo is Kane, They were friends when they were children. Their unexpected reunion isn't a happy one and comes to an abrupt end when Kane shoots himself in the head.

Kouji and Duke Fleed deal with the saucer beast and the base that is under construction.

Thoughts

Danbei is the main character for at least the first half of this episode. Once he falls off the cliff he drops out of the picture until Hikaru rescues him.

Kane's suicide was extremely sudden. I can only guess that seeing Maria shocked him into realizing what he had become. It probably didn't help that Zuril was the only one among the Vegans who respected him.

The saucer beast in this episode was, unlike most of its predecessors, not a spaceship that transforms into a giant robot. It was instead a giant bat-like creature. I think that there was at least one other episode in which the saucer beast was an actual beast.

This was a fun episode, better than I thought it might be. It still isn't great television but by the standards of this show it is better than most episodes even though it is a little overstuffed with plot twists.
