Gravestone on a Frozen Field
The Yamato makes a stop on Enceladus, one of the moons of Saturn. There is a distress beacon from an Earth spaceship broadcasting from Enceladus, but this is only part of the reason for going there. The Yamato's engine is damaged from the fight in the previous episode. The raw materials needed to repair it can be found in an abandoned mine on the moon.
The Gamila commander sees what the Yamato is up to and orders a ship that is near Enceladus to attack and bring back a prisoner. Once the Yamato docks the Gamilas attack. Tanks are deployed by the aliens.
Susume Kodai, Yuki Mori, Makoto Harada, and Au09 are sent to investigate the wreck of the ship sending out the distress signal. Yuki is in charge. Makoto is there in case there are any survivors that need medical assistance. The Gamilas strike the away team first. They blow up the small transport that the team used to get to the wreck.
The Gamilas leave one tank and its crew behind to attack the away team while the rest of the enemy's forces are focused on the Yamato. It doesn't look good for the humans until Akira Yamamoto takes the initiative to fly out in the Type-0 Model 52. She had been stuck working in accounting up to this point. She destroys a few of the tanks and creates enough of a distraction that some of the other fighter planes are able to launch.
Mori is almost captured by the Gamilas but Kodai guns down the Gamilas before they can escape with her. They are helped in part by Akira who destroys the tank that was left behind. Kodai looks at the gun he picked up from inside the wrecked spaceship. It bears his brother's name. The wrecked ship is the Yukikaze which was last seen in episode 1.
The mining and repair operation is completed. The Yamato departs Enceladus.
This was a good one. It was interesting to see the development of various elements of the story. Susume's relationship with Yuki, Akira breaking free from her desk job to prove her worth as a fighter pilot, and the general arc of the plot. The scene where Susume realizes that it is his brother's ship and that it is his brother's gun that saved his life and that of Yuki was very moving.
