The Sopranos 2.01

Guy Walks into a Psychiatrist's Office

Uncle Junior is still in jail. He has been indicted on several counts of racketeering. Tony's mother is still in the nursing home and he doesn't want to talk to her. Pussy returns from an extended absence. He was in Puerto Rico, at a clinic for his back. He didn't tell his wife because there was another woman involved.

Gigi Cestone, one of Tony's men, is given the task of dealing with Philly Parisi. Parisi was working for Uncle Junior. This is his first and last appearance on the show. Cestone kills him.

Christopher has been put in charge of a stock brokerage office. He's lazy and takes off with Adriana in the middle of the work day. He leaves a couple of his guys in charge: Matt Bevilaqua and Sean Gismonte. They take their jobs a little too seriously. They beat up one of their sales people when he balks at pushing Webistics, the pick of the day or week.

Tony's prodigal sister, Janice returns from Seattle. Tony isn't happy to see her. He knows her ways. He wants to sell his mother's house. Janice wants to keep it and tries to keep Tony from selling it. She really seems more interested in getting the money from the sale of the house.

Tony talks to Christopher about his flunkies, Matt and Sean. He can't have them sending people to the emergency room like they did. Christopher talks to them and they say they understand but it isn't really clear that they do. They seem more interested in moving up in the organization than in doing the hard work needed to get such a promotion.

Tony contacts Dr. Melfi, who moved her practice to a motel. Tony warned her at the end of last season that she might be in danger. He contacts her. He tells her the coast is clear but she's too freaked out to move back into her office. He surprises her by showing up at a diner where she's having lunch.

Tony wants to start seeing her again. He had a panic attack and crashed his car.His relationship with his family hasn't been good lately. There's a lot on his mind and he needs someone to talk to. He tries talking to another psychiatrist but he recognizes Tony and refuses to take him on as a client. Dr. Melfi nixes the idea of accepting him as a patient.

Notes

Matt Bevilaqua is played by Lillo Brancato, whom I know best from A Bronx Tale.

Barbara, Tony's other sister, also makes an appearance in this episode. She's there for the small family reunion that occurs when Tony and Carmella throw a party at their place. This is her first appearance on the show and just one of a handful of appearances she makes over the run of the series.

Hugh and Mary DeAngelis, Carmella's parents, make their first appearance in this episode. They make about 20 appearances throughout the run of the show. They are not fans of Tony and despise his mother.

Thoughts

This is a good opening to the second season. I like how it sets things up. I think that some of the things that I recalled as happening at the end of the first season don't happen until the end of this season. I'm eager to see how things play out and what else happens that I don't recall.
