Pilot
Josh Futturman is a janitor at Kronish, a bio tech firm started by Dr. Elias Kronish (Keith David). The company was started with the intent of finding a cure for Herpes. Josh likes to play video games in his spare time. He still lives at hope with his parents, Gabe (Ed Begley, Jr.) and Diane (Glenne Headley). His parents are very supportive but Josh wishes his life were different.
One night he beats Biotic Wars, a video game that no one has beaten before. He gets a visit from the two main characters in the video game Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf. They tell him that the game was a test that he passed successfully. He has proven himself to be the warrior they are looking for. They come from the future. They are looking for someone to help them save humanity.
Tiger and Wolf take him back to July 20, 1969. They materialize in the same house which is currently occupied by his grandparents and his father. They don't recognize him and his grandfather attacks him. Tiger and Wolf are very disappointed in Josh's fighting skills. They have to step in to help him out.
They get out of the house. Josh is still trying to get his bearings and just starting to realize that they really have traveled backward in time. The trio approaches a biker gang. The gang members don't willingly give up their clothes which Tiger and Wolf need because they stand out in their current attire. They beat the crap out of the gang and take their clothes.
The three time travelers go to a deli to grab a bite to eat and discuss what to do next. Wolf hasn't been very impressed with Josh, or Future Man as they call him, since he first met him. Tiger wanted to believe that Josh is their savior but she's starting to have her doubts. Josh manages to turn things around when he remembers a conversation he had with Dr. Kronish earlier in the episode. Dr, Kronish told Josh about why he was so eager to find a cure for Herpes and exactly where and when (07/20/1969) it happened. What makes it significant is that it is Dr. Kronish who will to the downfall of humanity. His cure for Herpes will cause those who get it to turn into zombie like creatures called Biotics.
The episode ends with the three time travelers heading off to look for Dr. Kronish and prevent him from getting herpes in the first place.
Thoughts
I've been meaning to give this show a try for a while. I'm very glad that I did. I laughed quite a bit and am curious to see how the more serious elements of the story develop.
Haley Joel Osment has a small part in this episode as Dr. Stu Camillo, an employee of Kronish. It wouldn't surprise me if he turns out to be the real bad guy.
Eliza Coupe also played Emmy, a recurring character on Casual.
I love how Josh points out that they've ripped off The Last Starfighter and Quantum Leap.
