The Sopranos 2.03

Toodle-Fucking-Oo

Richie Aprile, an old acquaintance of Tony, gets out of prison after 10 years. He's a made man and he expects to pick up right where he left off. He harasses Beansie, one of the local business men who used to report to him, before he went to prison, but now reports to Tony. Richie turns to Tony for support but Tony won't back him up and asks him to back off of Beansie.

Tony runs into Dr. Melfi when he is out having dinner with his crew. She acts fairly casual, as if they are old friends. She talks to Dr. Kupferberg, her psychiatrist, the next day. She's concerned about how she dealt with the encounter in the moment. She later has a nightmare that Tony had a panic attack while driving on a rainy night and was killed. Music from the Wizard of Oz was playing during the dream.

Meadow and Hunter get busted for throwing a party at Livia's place. The party got out of control. They had drugs that they obtained from Christopher, in the previous episode. The place gets trashed. Tony and Carmela are livid but unsure how to deal with the situation. They yell at Meadow. Janis tries to talk Tony and Carmela into taking it easy on Meadow. Janis changes her tune once she sees the trashed house.

Janis runs into Richie Aprile at her yoga class. They meet a couple more times. Richie seems interested in rekindling the relationship they had when they were teens. Janis is hesitant.

Richie approaches Uncle Junior and Livia, separately. He is still getting the lay of the land. Janis is also at the hospital on the night that Richie stops by to visit her mother. Eventually Richie seems to decide that he's had enough and goes after Beansie. He comes after him with a gun but Beansie escapes on foot. Richie gets him later on with his car. He hits him with it and then runs him over. Beansie survives but might be paralyzed.

The episode ends with Meadow cleaning up the mess made at her grandmother's place. Tony sees what she's doing but it's clear from the way the scene is played that he isn't the one who put her up to the task. Did she do it of her own accord or did someone else make her do it? Carmela? Janis? It's unclear but my best guess, if it is someone else, is that it's Janis.

I liked this episode a lot better than the last one. It felt like it had weight. It is setting things up, conflicts and relationships. Janis and Richie look like they will be seeing more of each other. It is also pretty clear that Richie is going to be a thorn in Tony's side. I don't think Richie will survive the end of the season. I don't recall exactly that happens to him but I'm pretty sure that Tony will have something to do with his departure from the show.
