Young Justice 2.08

Satisfaction

The original Roy Harper wakes up after being in suspended animation for 8 years. Green Arrow explains to him what happened or at least what they know happened. He was captured by Lex Luthor who then amputated his arm and used it to clone him. Green Arrow thought that Clone Roy was Original Roy when he found him and didn't think to keep looking. Original Roy doesn't blame Clone Roy. He does blame Green Arrow.

Green Arrow and Red Arrow turn their backs for a few minutes and Roy disappears. He goes to one of Green Arrow's hideouts. He takes a bunch of weapons and then heads to Metropolis, to get even with Luthor.

Jaime Reyes and Bart Allen spend some time talking near the memorials to fallen heroes in Mount Justice. They bond over snack food (Chicken Whizzies) and talking about mentors and possibly the fact that they are the newest members of the team.

Wally visits Artemis' grave with her mother. Cheshire and Sportsmaster are nearby. They too are affected by the death of their daughter (in the case of Sportsmaster) / sister (in the case of Cheshire). They both want revenge. Cheshire blames Aqualad. Sportmaster blames Black Manta and sees it as more than just a matter of revenge.

Several of the women (Miss Martian, Zatanna, Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Bumble Bee, Black Canary, Rocket) get together for a bachelorette party for Rocket. They try to keep the mood upbeat but they can't help think of Artemis whom they lost recently. Their little celebration is interrupted by Captain Cold who is there to rob a bank. He doesn't recognize them until they change into costume and take him down.

It is Conner Kent's birthday but the only one who seems to remember that fact is Wendy.

Speedy kicks off his quest for vengeance with a missile launcher. He follows up the rocket with a bunch of other weapons. Mercy, Luthor's cyborg bodyguard, doesn't make it easy for him. They fight in a parking garage beneath the LexCorp bulding while Luthor watches. Speedy defeats Mercy only to find himself surrounded by LexCorp security. Luthor makes him an offer that he decides to accept.

Green Arrow and Red Arrow arrive in Metropolis after the fight is over. Original Roy shows them what Luthor gave him, a cybernetic arm. He no longer wants to be called Speedy. His new name is Arsenal.

Thoughts

Mercy's arm is creepy as all get out. There's just something about the way it look when she transforms it into a weapon that gives me the chills. It looks more like a deformed human arm than it does a standard weapon.

I think I still prefer Clancy Brown as the voice of Lex Luthor (Superman: The Animated Series; Justice League; JLU) but I really like the way the character is played in this episode. He is just the right mix of intelligent and confident without being goofy or over the top.

I love the fight in the parking garage. Original Roy seems to have taken on more than he can handle. He is missing one arm and fighting a killer cyborg. It was tense and exciting and all kinds of awesome.

This feels like the beginning of a journey for Original Roy. He has accepted help from Luthor. Superboy did the same thing last season and that had repercussions. I assume that at some point the arm will turn Arsenal against his friends.

It isn't entirely clear who's side Arsenal is on now. I doubt that he is about to join the Light but what's his purpose now that he seems to have gotten over the fact that he lost his arm and spent the past 8 years on ice, thanks to Lex Luthor? What does it say about him that he accepted help from Luthor, of all people?

This is a really good episode. There's been a lot of stuff that has led to this moment but as I said before this episode feels like a beginning. The only moment that felt a little tacked on was the bachelorette party. It did help to emphasize the fact that Artemis is gone and that her teammates are still grieving over that fact. This season has yet to really disappoint me. I look forward to seeing where it goes next.
