Orange Is the New Black 3.02

Bed Bugs and Beyond

Flaca goes to the doctor to complain about what she thinks are crabs but turns out to be bed bugs. That's where they begin. The prisoners have to get rid of their clothes, bedding, etc. New temporary clothing is brought in from a supplier but there aren't enough uniforms for everyone. A lot of the women wind up having to walk around in their underwear.

Delia Powell (Mary Steenburgen), Mendez's mother, comes to the prison to see Aleida. Bennett is at the desk when she checks in. She recognizes his name from stories her son told her. He gets very uncomfortable, very quickly. Delia has a chat with Aleida. She convinces Aleida that she can provide a better environment for their grandchild than Daya can. Aleida doesn't come around to Delia's point of view until they start talking money.

Bennett gets the backstory spotlight. All the scenes talk place in Afghanistan. He gets a lot of crap when he first shows up but eventually he starts to fit in. It ends badly when one of the local soldiers toss a grenade into the building where Bennett is with a bunch of other soldiers. Bennett jumps away from the grenade. One of his friends jumps on it.

Chapman comes clean with Vause she admits she had someone rat her out. It creates a rift between them, which lasts for most of the episode.

Bennett and Dayanara confront Aleida about her meeting with Delia. Aleida says nothing about money. She talks strictly in terms of what it would do for the baby to be raised by Delia. Dayanara starts to be turned. Bennett is against it but Daya starts to wonder if it won't be better for her child to be raised by Delia Powell.

Caputo tries to avoid taking drastic measures but he is forced to. Things take a turn for the worse when he finds out that there are plans to shut down Litchfield within a month. The prisoners will be transferred elsewhere. There are no plans to make provisions for the staff.

Nicky is still trying to get the heroin out of the duct in the laundry room. She approaches Luschek about helping them. He agrees to do the job for 80% of the take. Everyone seems happy but when Nicky and Boo go to retrieve the drugs they discover that someone has taken them.

Red is assigned to the same room mate as before, Chapman. She's angry at Chapman for lying to her about how her store was doing. She goes to see Healy about getting her lawyer added to her visitors list and getting her husband removed. Healy gets very angry and tells her she needs to reconsider. It seems as if he might be projecting some of his own marital problems on Red.

Bennett goes to visit Cesar. He finds out that Cesar has another women, Margarita. He has a child with her and she is pregnant with another. Cesar is very strict with Daya's siblings. He pulls a gun on her brother when he won't eat some french fries. Cesar insists that John take crib that his baby is currently sleeping in. Bennett gets part of the way home before having second thoughts. He leaves the crib on the side of the road.

The episode ends with Chapman and Vause reconciling. They go into the library which was shut down after all the books had to be burned because it was suspected that some of the bed bugs might have found a home there. The reconciliation starts as a fight but ends with sex.

Thoughts

This episode felt a little less scattershot than the last one. It focuses on a few story lines. Some get more screen time than others.

I wasn't too crazy about the backstory flashback. I don't feel as if it really filled anything in about Bennett. It was already known that he had been a soldier and that he lost his leg while he was in the army. It would have made more sense if it had focused on how he wound up at Litchfield or just how he started working in the correctional system.

Who took the drugs? Did Nicky take them and is she trying to scam Boo?

It didn't take long for Chapman to come clean with Vause.

The underwear that the prisoners wore was far from sexy, even if some of the prisoners are good looking.

There was no sign of the new counselor in this episode.

I'm starting to wonder if Daya is going to miscarry. Bennett is clearly starting to have second thoughts about raising a kid, especially after seeing Cesar and his kids. I don't think Bennett has seen the last of Cesar. He probably going to pop up again at an inopportune moment for Bennett.

On the whole this was far from perfect but things are developing. The only misstep in my estimation was the backstory spotlight. The rest of it was good stuff and kept my interest.
