Sweet-N-All
Jackie grinds up Percocet and puts it in packages of artificial sweetener. She then seals up the packages and takes them to work with her. She gets to take one of the three packages herself. Gloria takes one from Jackie, not realizing what it is. She is flying high as a kite for the rest of the episode. Jackie uses the final package to help a cabbie who is having heart pain.
A teenage patient is brought in with a head injury. He was skateboarding at the time of the accident. Dr. Cooper thinks the patient is in danger of having an aneurysm. Dr. O'Hara disagrees and is shocked when Dr. Cooper, who is younger and less experienced, turns out to be correct. The patient survives but has a long road ahead of him. Jackie delivers the news to the teen's mother. It is then that Jackie learns that it was her idea for him to take off his helmet. They were in the middle of a photo shoot for a magazine cover and she thought it would look better that way.
A man comes in and attacks Jackie. It turns out to have nothing to do with her. He comes back more than once. He injures himself. Jackie gets the story from him eventually: he is trying to care for his mother who is in bad shape and has no insurance.
The severed ear resurfaces. The toilet coughs it back up. Jackie lets Zoey take the blame for it. She also counsels her about expectations.
Thoughts
Jackie's home life is there but so far it feels like window dressing. I'm not getting any strong feelings one way or another from it.
This episode had a few good moments but on the whole wasn't great. One of those moments, which I thought was played brilliantly, was the reveal that the mother of the skateboarder was the one who told him to take off his helmet. These moments were enough for me but without them I wouldn't have enjoyed this one at all.
