The Vegans pull Commander Yara, one of their prisoners, out of their prison on the dark side of the moon. They want him to use his knowledge about earthquakes to complete the device they have built in the mountains of the Kanto region of Japan. The device will cause a massive earthquake that will cause much death and destruction. Commander Yara refuses to help until Lady Gandal threatens to send his mother to the mines of the Flaming Ghost Planet. The Vegans send Commander Yara to Earth in Saucer Beast Garu Garu.
Kouji is the first one to encounter Commander Yara and Garu Garu. The TFO is no match for the saucer beast. Commander Yara is ready to crush Kouji but he waits for Duke Fleed to show up in Grendizer. Capturing Grendizer and Duke Fleed is part of his mission on Earth. Yara then makes a deal with Fleed. He agrees to not use the earthquake device if Duke Fleed will surrender himself and Grendizer. Kouji tells him not to but Duke Fleed agrees. Yara lets Kouji go as part of the bargain.
The Vegans take possession of Grendizer and Duke Fleed is taken away in handcuffs. Commander Yara reports in to Blaki only to discover that the Vegans still want to use the earthquake machine. Yara goes to see Duke Fleed in the brig. He gives him a small but key component to the earthquake device. Without the component the earthquake machine won't work.
Blaki send Captain Bouchi to bring Commander Yara back to the mother ship. They are concerned about Yara's loyalty to their cause. They brainwash Yara but before they do so they tell him that they sent his mother to the Flaming Ghost Planet where she died. Yara is sent back to Earth, after being brainwashed, to kill Duke Fleed and unleash the earthquake machine.
Kouji breaks in to the mountain where the Vegans have their earthquake machine. He uses a combination of mountain climbing and hang-gliding to get into the mountain complex. The Vegans are getting ready to lower Duke Fleed into a pool of magma when Kouji shows up. He shoots a couple of the guards and then frees Duke Fleed.
Duke Fleed and Kouji make their way to Grendizer and escape from the mountain hideout. Commander Yara comes after them in Garu Garu. They fight briefly. Grendizer is victorious. Commander Yara and Garu Garu are destroyed in the battle.
Thoughts
Tokyo is located in the Kanto Region of Japan but it is not shown in this episode.
The flashback scenes on distant planets are never illustrated in this show. Still images are used instead. This episode is no exception.
Kouji never seems to give up on attacking saucer beasts in the TFO. He never wins but he attacks them every chance he gets.
Commander Yara's look reminded me of Commander Minao from 1.09. They also have in common that they were both blackmailed into helping the Vegans try to destroy Duke Fleed and Grendizer.
Kouji's rescue of Duke Fleed reminded of something out of a James Bond film. It wasn't as elegant as a Bond film but the intention was certainly there.
On the whole I thought this was better than average, although it did feel a bit rushed.
