Young Justice 2.07

Depths

Artemis returns to the team for a mission led by Nightwing. The other members of the team are Miss Martian, Superboy, and Lagaan. Miss Martian and Lagaan continue to act all lovey-dovey in front of the others, which irks Superboy. Their mission is to protect the launch of a communications satellite that is intended to create a communications link with Mars. Ferris Aircraft (or is it spacecraft?) is the company behind the launch.

Everything does not go as planned. Lagaan is patrolling the near by Ocean when he spots a couple of ships arriving. They are manned by Black Manta's troops and led by Kaldur'ahm aka Aqualad. The underwater troops attack. Lagaan doesn't wait for backup and attacks the water breathers by himself. He does okay at first but eventually they knock him out and take him prisoner.

Superboy and Miss Martian get into an argument before the attack begins. He doesn't approve of her use of her mental abilities to force read the thoughts of others. He compares her to Psimon. He also lets drop that she used her abilities to try and change his memories. Their argument is dropped once Black Manta's troops attack.

The sea dwellers launch numerous missiles at the rocket on the launch pad. Superboy, piloting Miss Martian's bio-ship, knocks out most of them. Only one of them gets past him and it gets knocked out by one of Artemis' arrows. Miss Martian is underwater fighting the invaders from under the sea. She sees Lagaan get taken away but is unable to get to him before the ship carrying him takes off.

Khaldur'Ahm comes to the surface to try and insure victory for his father's side. Nightwing and Artemis have to fight him and a squad of his troops. They manage to take out the troops but Aqualad proves to be a little more difficult. He gets the drop on Artemis and kills her. He and his men leave once they see that the rocket carrying the satellite has been destroyed.

Nightwing tries to save Artemis using CPR and mouth-to-mouth but it is too late. They take her back to HQ. Everyone is heartbroken.

Khaldur'ahm returns to his father who congratulates him. Black Manta reveals that even though all the missiles failed he had a backup plan. He had a bomb smuggled on to the rocket weeks before the attack. That's what blew it up. Aqualad didn't try to take credit for the successful destruction of the rocket. That impresses his father.

Nightwing meets with three others in what looks like a warehouse as it is revealed that (a) Aqualad hasn't changed sides and it actually working under cover, and (b) Artemis is still alive. Wally is also present in the warehouse. They are the only ones that know the truths about Aqualad and Artemis. Nightwing gives her a necklace that Zatanna provided. It disguises her looks. Only Nightwing, Aqualad and Kid Flash see her as she truly ens. The episode ends with her leaving with Aqualad.

Thoughts

I was very moved by the death of Artemis. I knew it couldn't be for real or that she was going to come back somehow but it still got to me.

I'm glad to see that Aqualad hasn't really switched sides. I detected that something seemed off and guessed what was going on a minute before the reveal. I think it might have been more effective if they hadn't revealed Artemis' status in this episode. I can't see them doing that in a show like this that is aimed at kids but I still would have liked to have seen it.

I'm not sure what is going to happen to Lagaan but I don't think his relationship with M'Gaan will last to the end of the season.

Somethings went a little too smoothly in this episode. Black Manta's planted a devices on the rocket? That's a little too much but not enough to ruin my enjoyment of this episode. On the whole I enjoyed this episode which sets things up nicely for the next one.
