Dear White People 1.09

Chapter IX

Coco doesn't care for article that Lionel wrote about Troy. She thinks he exposed too much writing about Troy's relationship with his father, the Dean. Troy doesn't seem to mind. There are other secrets that Lionel learned that he didn't write about.

Troy interrupts Coco's interrogation of Lionel to tell her that he's been invited to a cocktail party for donors. The Hancocks, a couple of the top donors to the school, will be there.

Coco changes her hair after Troy accidentally (?) pulls off her wig while they are in bed together. She goes for a more natural look. Troy and Coco do their best at the cocktail party but a couple things get in the way. Professor Hobbs shows up and pulls Troy aside to tell him about her wedding plans. Coco gets suspicious and inserts herself into their conversation. She suspects something is up between them, despite the fact that Professor Hobbs is engaged.

Coco and Troy get pulled into a conversation with his father and the Hancocks. The donors don't like the news their hearing from campus. They are talking about the Dear Black People party and the incident when a campus police officer pulled a gun on a student. They think that Armstrong-Parker is part of the problem. They think that it needs to be integrated. Dean Fairbanks and Troy try talking the Hancocks out of this opinion but they seem adamant.

Coco tries talking Troy into getting Sam to not protest the upcoming town hall meeting, later that night. She also tricks him into admitting that he is having an affair with Professor Hobbs. She goes to Sam herself and tries talking her into cancelling the protest. Sam laughs at her. She thinks that Troy put her up to this. Troy shows up a minute later, while Coco is still there, to ask her the same thing. She laughs again, this time because they can't seem to coordinate their actions better.

The episode ends with Coco and Troy in his room. She thinks he is breaking up with her. He thought they were just hooking up and were never really together.

Thoughts

There's a moment when Coco and Sam are alone when it seemed like Sam might tell Coco about her current problems with Gabe and Reggie. She doesn't.

Coco also reveals a little more about her past, specifically about her mentor, Leonard. He helped her get out of a public school and into a prep school.

This was a short and to the point episode. I think it sets up a couple things. Coco is no longer together with Troy. Will they get back together again? Probably not in the final episode, but I could be wrong. The town hall meeting and the protest have to happen in the next episode. I'm not sure what else could be the focus of the next and final episode of the season. I think it is also possible that Sam will break up with Reggie. I don't think she thinks of them as being together but I think he does.

This episode is good but not my favorite. It felt like a necessary stepping stone on the way to the end of the season.
