Knights of Sidonia 1.05

Adrift

Tanikaze defies orders and goes looking for Hoshijiro. He runs out of fuel just as he reaches her. They are stranded, adrift. They open the garde's sails which will enable the garde to recharge but they have a limited amount of supplies. They have enough oxygen for 60 days but only 12 days worth of water and even less food.

Tanikaze and Hoshijiro are adrift for almost two weeks when the food runs out. Hoshijiro has been able to forgo eating as much as Tanikaze because unlike him she has the ability to photosynthesize. She has to strip down in order to do it. She tries to do it while he is sleeping but he wakes up early and they are both embarrassed by the situation.

Shinatose and others, back on Sidonia, resume their classes including one in history. Sidonia is one of 500 ships launched from Earth in 2109. The last other ship that Sidonia had contact with was the Aposims on Feb 26, 2691.

Lala confronts Captain Kobayashi. They were both part of the original strike team that discovered the Kabi, almost 600 years before, in a mysterious alien structure. Ochiai was also part of that team. No one knows who built the structure but the Kabi is invaluable beacause when used as part of a Kabizashi it is the only thing that can destroy a Gauna.

The rations eventually run out and then Tanikaze and Hoshijiro discover that they don't have as much water left as they thought they did. There is damage to the water tank and they are just about out. Tanikaze starts to get delirious after the water is all gone. Hoshijiro revives him by programming her suit to filter her urine and feeds him that. Tanikaze wakes up and remembers that there is water in the garde's lubricant, if they can just filter it. They try it and it works but then a rescue team shows up.

The rescue team is a 256-garde formation led by Samari. They defied orders and went looking for their missing comrades. They should be punished but Captain Kobayashi decides that would be impractical.

Thoughts

This is a much lower key episode than the last one. Tanikaze tells her about his grandfather. She tells him about her theory about the Gauna. She thinks that they want to communicate with humanity, despite the fact that they destroyed Earth. Her notions are driven in part by the fact that they appeared like giant humans when they first appeared.
