Romancing the Stone (1984)

starring Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas
directed by Robert Zemeckis

Joan Wilder (Turner), romance novelist, travels to Columbia to find her sister who has been kidnapped by American thugs (and cousins) Ralph (Danny DeVito) and Ira (Zack Norman). Ira holds Joan's sister hostage while Ralph pursues Joan. She is also pursued by Colonel Zolo, a Colombian soldier. Zolo and Ralph are both interested in the treasure map that Joan's sister sent her and that she has brought with her in the hopes of exchanging it for her sister.

Things quickly spin out of control. Joan is rescued from almost certain death by Jack T. Colton (Douglas), an American, who has never heard of Joan Wilder but becomes much more interested in her once he learns about the treasure map. Ralph and Zolo continue to pursue Wilder and Colton as they seek to get back to Cartagena and find the treasure.

Thoughts

It bears a certain resemblance to Raiders of the Lost Ark, but only in passing. I recall seeing this in the theater when it was first released. I enjoyed it then. It is far from perfect but I still think it is a fun movie to watch.
