The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel 1.08

Thank You and Good Night

Midge and Susie commiserate over drinks about Harry Drake's reaction to her set about Sophie Lennon. They don't know what they are going to do. Susie still has a couple penny ante gigs set up. They decide to go ahead with those.

Midge and Joel chat at Ethan's birthday party, the next day. She wants to move forward with divorce proceedings. He does not. He tells her about the promotion he's sure he's going to get. They take their kids home after the party. One thing leads to another, Midge and Joel end up sleeping together. She gets him to sneak out the next morning before her mother finds out.

Joel is flying high the next day. He's very excited about the presentation that his team is getting ready to put on. He's counting on it going well. He shares with his team that he Midge might be getting back together soon. They are very happy for him.

Midge doesn't get to do the penny ante gigs. Harry Drake has gotten her blackballed. No one will hire her. He even gets the owner of the Gaslight Cafe to keep from giving her time. Susie is blackballed too. Midge shares with Susie that she might be getting back together with Joel. Susie isn't thrilled by the news.

Penny shows up at Midge's job and accuses her of trying to steal Joel back. Joel decides to give comedy another try. He goes to the Gaslight and talks to Susie, not realizing who she is or that she no longer books the talent. She tells him to talk to Jackie. She doesn't realize who he is until she overhears him talking about Midge to his friend.

Midge tells Abe, her father, that she might be getting back together with Joel. He doesn't know how to respond. He relationship with Rose has gone downhill recently and its in part because she and Joel split. He warns Midge not to tell Rose anything until she is sure.

Joel finds out that Midge has been performing at the Gaslight. It takes the winds out of his sails. He quits his job in the middle of a meeting the next day. Susie talks to Lenny Bruce and gets him to agree to do a show at the Gaslight. He goes on but just to introduce Midge who agrees to drop the stage name of Amanda Gleason.

Midge doesn't realize it but Joel is in the audience. He doesn't like what he hears. He confronts Susie about it. Susie is more than happy to fight him. She is supportive of Midge's decision to do standup, he is not. He gets into a fight outside the Gaslight with a guy who heckled Midge before walking out. Midge has a great set.

Thoughts

It didn't occur to me until I was watching this episode that Joel didn't know about Midge's on stage work. Her parents also don't know about it. This can't go on forever. Will Joel be the one who leaks it? I don't know.

I thought this was a strong end to the season. I'm considering watching season two. I'm still not crazy about the standup. I like most of other stuff on this show, some I really like. Tony Shaloub is great. I like most of the relationships and the way the characters interact.
