Thank You and Good Night

Midge and Susie commiserate over drinks about Harry Drake's reaction to her set about Sophie Lennon. They don't know what they are going to do. Susie still has a couple penny ante gigs set up. They decide to go ahead with those.

Midge and Joel chat at Ethan's birthday party, the next day. She wants to move forward with divorce proceedings. He does not. He tells her about the promotion he's sure he's going to get. They take their kids home after the party. One thing leads to another, Midge and Joel end up sleeping together. She gets him to sneak out the next morning before her mother finds out.

Joel is flying high the next day. He's very excited about the presentation that his team is getting ready to put on. He's counting on it going well. He shares with his team that he Midge might be getting back together soon. They are very happy for him.

Put that on Your Plate!

Midge's act at the Gaslight seems to be getting stronger. She's just added some material to her act about her parents having sex. Susie thinks that it is time for her to start doing shows at spots other than the Gaslight. Susie talks to Harry Srake, a much bigger agent than her, and gets Midge a gig opening for Sophie Lennon. Susie takes Midge to see Sophie and Harry. Sophie invites Midge to come over for a visit.

Abe overhears Midge and Imogene, her friend, talking about the state of Midge's relationship with Joel. Abe brings home a colleague of his who is also young, handsome, and a divorce lawyer. Midge and Rose don't know how to react. Rose is offended. 

Abe tries to tell Rose about Miriam turning Joel away when he said he wanted to get back together with her. Rose is offended that it took Abe a month to tell her about this and that Miriam didn't say anything to her about it. She goes to the fortuneteller only to discover that the fortuneteller moved on and been replaced by another, younger fortuneteller. 

Joel meets with Abe to tell him about a possible promotion and his plan to take care of Midge and the kids. Abe doesn't want to talk to his son-in-law but he relents after several minutes of Joel talking through the door.

Midge visits Sophie Lennon at her home. Sophie looks nothing in private like she does on stage. She is very well off and has lots of servants. She gives Midge some career advice and gives her a fur coat. Midge is perplexed but accepts the gift. Midge goes from Sophie's place to Shabbos services where she meets up with her parents. Rose gets irate when Miriam won't tell her, in the middle of the service, where she got the fur coat.

Harry comes to the Gaslight to see Midge's act. Midge's head is filled with her encounters with Sophie and Rose. She talks about first Rose and then Sophie, instead of doing her regular act. The crowd seems to love it but Harry feels insulted. He gets up and leaves. Susie tries to talk him into staying but he leaves anyway.

Mrs. X at the Gaslight

Midge continues to perform at parties. She starts performing with Randall, another comic, at parties. Randall introduces her to his agent from the William Morris Agency. Susie finds out about this and gets a chance to see them perform together.

Abe gets a job offer from Bell Labs. He acts cagey toward the recruiter but secretly he is delighted. He takes the family out for dinner. Noah, Midge's brother, and Astrid, Noah's wife, are just back from Israel and join them for dinner. The meal is ruined when they spot Joel and Penny across the room. They leave but Joel spots them. He talks to Midge for a moment, alone. He notices that she is no longer wearing her wedding ring.

Susie is not taken by Midge and Randall's act. She tries to discourage Midge from performing with him. She goes so far as to confront Randall's agent at the William Morris agency.

The episode ends with a couple of faceless guys listening to a recording of Midge at the Gaslight Cafe. They have no idea who she is but they like what they hear. They label the recording "Mrs. X at the Gaslight".

Doink

Midge gets a job working in a department store. She wants a job as an elevator operator but they won't hire her to do that. She instead gets a job at the makeup counter. Her mother is very disappointed. Her father is a bit surprised and has lots of questions.

Joel introduces Penny to his parents. They are not impressed.

Midge bombs on stage at the Gaslight. She's doesn't understand what went wrong. Midge turns to Herb Smith, a "professional", for help writing material. His help doesn't help. She bombs again. The jokes Smith writes are old and tired and seem as if they are written for someone else. Midge and Susie get into an argument after her second bombing run. Midge declares that she's done with comedy.

The next night Midge goes to a party thrown by one of her coworkers. She tells her coworkers stories and quickly has them all laughing.

The Disappointment of the Dionne Quintuplets

The episode opens with a montage of scenes There are scenes of Midge and Joel moving into the apartment. They are mixed with scenes of Midge supervising as movers move things out of their apartment. Midge and her kids move in with her parents. Rose is convinced that Midge and Joel will get back together within a couple weeks.

Susie makes business cards, one at a time. She shows them to people but then asks for them back. She and Midge make plans to meetup the next day to talk shop. They meet at the Gaslight Cafe. Susie takes Midge to a record store. Midge buys a Red Foxx album for $50. 

Joel calls Midge to let her know that he has an apartment and is no longer living with their friends. He wants to see Ethan, their son. Midge doesn't want to stop by the office. Joel agrees to pick Ethan up. The next day Midge goes to the park with Ethan. She winds up speaking at a rally to protest plans to destroy the park. She is invited up to speak by Jane Jacobs who is leading the protest of the plans which were drawn up by Robert Moses.

Midge calls Joel's office only to discover that he isn't there. She talks to Mrs. Moskowitz, Joel's new older secretary. Midge gets his address from Mrs. Moskowitz and takes Ethan over to his new place. It looks very much like their place. Penny, Joel's former secretary is there. Midge has a few choice words for Joel but she leaves Ethan with him.

Because You Left

Midge gets bailed out by Lenny Bruce. It is his way of repaying her for helping him out.

Rose, Midge’s mother, is sick with worry about Midge. Abe doesn’t listen but then he goes to see Moishe, Joel’s father. He offers to pay for half of the apartment. Moishe agrees to the offer.

Midge gets a lawyer and goes to court. She mouths off to the judge and is held in contempt. She needs $200 to pay the fine she incurred. She turns to Joel for help and he comes through. She apologizes to the judge, which she did not want to do. She is then pushed into pleading guilty, which she also did not want to do and is sentenced to time served.

Midge hangs out with Lenny and helps to emcee a jazz club. It gives her an opportunity to try out some new material. She goes home and finds Joel waiting for her outside the building. He tells her he wants to get back with her. She says no. He asks her why. Her answer is the title of this episode.

Ya Shivu v Bolsham Dome Na Khlome

The breaking of the fast gets canceled at Midge and Joel's place. Rose, calls everyone and tells them that they have come down with the flu. Midge starts to worry that her looks are changing because she is now separated.

Joel goes to see his father, Moishe Maisel, who owns a clothing business. Rose goes to see a psychic who promises that everything is going to be all right. Susie comes to see Midge but Midge can't believe that she flashed the crowd the night before and has changed her mind about performing on stage. 

Shirley, Joel's mother, calls Rose. A dinner is planned for the next night for everyone (Midge and Joel, Abe and Rose, Moishe and Shirley) at Midge and Joel's place. Joel finds out that his father has contacted Joel's uncle, who is also Joel's boss, and had his secretary reassigned to another department. Joel goes to his father but Moishe won't budge.

The dinner happens. Things get explosive. Midge finds out that their apartment is paid for by her father-in-law. She winds up walking out and heads back to the coffee house where she got arrested a couple nights before. She goes on stage. She isn't drunk this time. She airs some of her grievances and get some laughs but then the cops walk in and she gets arrested for using obscene language.

Pilot

Midge gets married to Joel Maisel. They have 2 kids in 4 years. He has a steady job but he wants to be a comedian. She does what she can to support him. She bribes the manager the club where he performs to get him a better time slot. She thinks he's funny. She learns he's been doing another comic's act. Things come apart for Midge and Joel. He loses confidence and bombs. He reveals he's been having an affair with his secretary. He packs his stuff and leaves.
