directed by Marc Forster
The movie starts with a car chase, in Italy, very soon after the end of the previous James Bond movie. Bond is in one car being pursued by another car. The road is narrow. There is lots of traffic. The chase moves from paved roads to unpaved roads. They are in the mountains and there are lots of steep drops. Bond eventually evades those pursuing him. He meets up with M (Judy Dench) and some other MI-6 agents. He has Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) in the trunk of the car.
M and Bond try to interrogate Mr. White but it turns out that MI-6 has been infiltrated. Mitchell, M's bodyguard, turns out to be working for the same organization as Mr. White. Mitchell kills one of the other MI-6 agents and then takes off running. Bond goes after him which leads to a long chase through Sienna, Italy. The chase ends with Bond killing Mitchell.
The next lead in the case takes Bond to Haiti. He finds and kills a man who has a brief case with valuable information. He meets Camille Montes (Olga Kurylenko) but then she tries to kill him. He follows her which leads to a boat chase with some Bolivians who are led by General Medrano, who aspires to take control of Bolivia. Camille wants to kill Medrano but Bond gets in the way while rescuing her.
Bond heads to Austria next. He is pursuing a man named Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric). Bond gets enough intel to learn that the UK's Prime Minister has a close friends who works for the same organization as White and Greene. M tries to restrict Bond from traveling so he turns to Mathis (Giancarlo Giannini), who since the last movie has been acquitted on all charges. Mathis helps Bond get to Bolivia, where Greene is getting ready to make a deal with General Medrano.
Bond has to deal with Fields (Jemma Arterton), a UK Foreign Office employee, once he arrives in Bolivia. He takes her to a party thrown by Greene. Camille is also at the party. She reveals that she works for Bolivian intelligence. They work together from there on out. They go for a wild ride in a plane. She tells him about why she wants to kill Medrano. They eventually make their way to a spot in the Bolivian desert where Greene and Medrano are meeting and do what they can to disrupt the get together.
Thoughts
I saw this movie when it first came out. I was a little confused by it. I had not seen Casino Royale at that time. There are lots of references to things that happened in Casino Royale. I don't know if it is essential to see Casino Royale before watching Quantum of Solace but it certainly adds context that I was missing the first time around.
This movie is confusing to watch. Casino Royale felt the same. Everything moves so fast. There was no fight or chase scene that impressed me the way the one set in Madagascar did in Casino Royale. Not everything is resolved in this movie. There are still loose threads and hints of things to come in future films.
