Starcrossed - Part 3

Shayera returns to Thanagarian command ship where she is met by Kragger. He arrest her and takes her to Hro Talak. Kragger shows Hro the evidence that Shayera has told the Justice League about their plans and returned Green Lantern's ring. Talak is anrgy he has Shayera locked up and then sends Kragger to kill the others.

The Justice League is still in the Batcave making plans when Kragger and a squad of Thanagarians arrive at Wayne Manor. The Leaguers defeat the Thanagarians. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern head to the Gobi Desert, where the Thanagarian command ship and the Hyperpace Bypass Generator are located. Batman, J'onn J'onzz, and Flash interrogate Kragger to learn how to fly the Thanagarian craft. J'onn has to use his mental powers to enter Kragger's mind and learn how to fly the Thanagarian ship.

Hro visits Shayera. He offers to forgive her if she will just tell him that it was a mistake and that she was only with Green Lantern because she was lonely. She refuses.

Martian Manhunter, Batman, and Flash arrive on the Watchtower which has been taken over by the Thanagarians. They deal with the Thanagarians. Batman tricks J'onn and Flash into getting on to the shuttlecraft with the Thanagarians. Batman takes the Watchtower out of orbit and down to Earth. He plans to crash it into the Hyperspace Bypass Generator.

Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern attack the Thanagarian Command Ship. They wreck all kinds of havoc. Wonder Woman frees Hawkgirl. Green Lantern finds the force field deactivation chamber. Hro Talak is there guarding it. The two men fight. Hro breaks Green Lantern's ring and is ready to kill him when Shayera shows up.

The two Thanagarians fight until she tricks Hro and he gets a shock that knocks him unconscious. Green Lantern and Shayera deactivate the force field together. Batman pilots the Watchtower into the Hyperspace Bypass Generator. Superman saves him before the Watchtower impacts with the generator.

The Thanagarians decide to leave Earth once the Hyperspace Bypass Generator has been destroyed. They leave Shayera behind. The League meets to decide what to do about Hawkgirl. They are ready to announce their decision when she announces that she is stepping down from the team. Hawkgirl and Green Lantern get one last scene together and then she flies off, alone.

Thoughts

Batman tricks Flash amd J'onn into getting into the shuttle with the Thanagarians and then locks the door but couldn't J'onn have phased through the door if he has wanted to? Maybe he didn't want to? I don't know.

I didn't remember the brief moment between Shayera and Alfred. I found it to be very moving. I was also moved by the final scene between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern. No surprise there.

What happened to Green Lantern's ring? Did he get a new one? Did it get repaired? Was this ever addressed in the comic book series based on this show? I don't know.

This is such a good 3-part story. I have seen it multiple times. I don't think it has ever disappointed me. It certainly lived up to my memories of it.

Extras

There is a commentary track for this episode. Bruce Timm, Dwayne McDuffie, Butch Lukic, and James Tucker talk about a number of things related to the episode and the show as a whole:
  • They didn't know at the time they made Starcrossed if this was it for Justice League or if they would be making any more episode..
  • Hawkgirl's was going to betray the Justice League. That much was part of the plan when they first started working on the show.
  • Maria Canals, the voice of Hawkgirl, was not happy when she realized her character was leaving the team
  • There was a certain amount of hate for Hawkgirl. Some fans wanted Hawkman on the team, others wanted Aquaman.
  • They worked hard to make sure that each member of the Justice League got their moments to shine in Starcrossed.
  • Kragger was modelled after Martin Landau in North by Northwest
  • Part of the scene where J'onn goes into Kragger's mind was modeled after a scene from the movie She (1933)
  • They originally wanted to use Hawkman instead of Hro Talak but DC wouldn't let them have Hawkman turn evil so they created Hro Talak
It is a fun chat with a lot of extra details. Well worth a listen for those who enjoyed the show.
