No Time to Die (2021)

starring Daniel Craig
directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga

The movie opens with flashback to Madeline Swann's (Lea Seydoux) youth. Someone came looking for her father. Her mother gets killed. The killer comes after her. She shoots him but he still keeps coming after her. He chases her out onto the ice of a frozen lake. She falls through the ice and is stuck under the ice.

James Bond is still with Madeline. She wants him to make peace with his memories of Vesper Lynd. He goes to Vesper's grave. An attempt is made on his life while he is at the grave. He thinks that Madeline knows something about it. She is keeping secrets from him. She insists that she had nothing to do with it. He doesn't believe her and puts her on a train. He says he never wants to have anything to with her again.

5 years later. James is living in Jamaica. He gets approached by MI-6 and the CIA, both of whom want him to track down Obruchev, a scientist who disappeared after an attack on a secret weapons lab in the UK. Bond refuses to help MI-6 but he winds up working with the Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) and a couple of other CIA agents. He is teamed up with CIA Agent Paloma (Ana de Armas).

Bond and Paloma infiltrate a party thrown by Spectre to celebrate the birthday of Blofeld, who is still in prison in the UK. They find Obruchev at the party and get him out of there with some help from MI-6 agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch), the new 007. A deadly device is released at the party which kills everyone from Spectre.

Bond hands Obruchev over to Felix Leiter but then Logan Ash (Billy Magnussen), Leiter's partner, turns on him. Ash kills Leiter and traps Bond in a sinking ship. Bond escapes the sinking ship but by then Ash has vanished with Obruchev.

Bond returns to the UK. He has to team up with Madeline, for the first time since he abandoned her. They go to interview Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) who is still in prison. Swann leaves before the interview begins. Bond gets angry at Blofeld and unknowingly infects him with the same disease that killed the people at the party. Blofeld dies within a minute from the infection.

Bond goes looking for Swann, who has disappeared. He finds her at the same home where the flashback took place at the beginning of the movie. James meets Mathilde, Madeline's daughter, whom she insists is not his. They don't have much time to talk because Bond learns that MI-6 had been tracking Ash and he is headed their way.

James, Madeline, and Mathilde take off. They are chased by Ash and others who are all working for Lyutsfer Safin (Rami Malek), the mastermind behind the disease that killed off Spectre. Ash gets killed. Madeline and Mathilde get abducted by Safin's men.

Bond teams up with Nomi and infiltrates Safin's headquarters to (a) prevent the madman from unleashing deadly diseases on the world, and (b) rescue Madeline and Mathilde.

Thoughts

I enjoyed the first hour or so of this movie. I felt it was cruising along at a great pace until after Bond returned from Jamaica.

There are a lot of things in this movie that don't exactly make sense if you start to think about them. That is not unusual for a James Bond film.

I'm torn as to whether I like this movie better than Spectre. It is right up there with Spectre. Both are flawed as are all the Bond films but I think I like them better than first three Daniel Craig Bond films.
