Dead Ringers (1988)

Dead Ringers (1988)

starring Jeremy Irons, Geneviève Bujold
directed by David Cronenberg

115 minutes

Twin brothers and gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both played by Jeremy Irons) find their relationship deteriorating after Beverly enters a relationship with actress Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold), one of Elliot's patients.

Claire has a history of misusing prescription drugs. Beverly joins her in experimenting with prescription meds in the hopes that it will enhance their sexual adventures. It seems to help at first but Elliot can sense that something is off with his brother.

Claire leaves town for work. Beverly gets worse while he is gone. Elliot tries to help his brother. Elliot becomes convinced that the way to help him is to start experimenting with prescription drugs himself.

Claire eventually returns to town. She tries reconnecting with Beverly. He wants to but his relationship with his brother gets in the way.

Thoughts

I didn't recognize any of the actors in this movie other than the two stars.

I saw this movie once before, not long after it was first released, probably in 1989. I believe it was at the Hoff Theater in the Student Union Building at the University of Maryland. I recall being puzzled by and not really satisfied with it.

I don't think this film deserves as much praise as it has received. It isn't awful but it really didn't move me very much. I felt as though I was seeing it from a distance. It was very weird and creepy but that wasn't enough for me and I didn't feel pulled into the world in which it takes place. The tag line of "Two Bodies, Two Minds, One Soul" felt a bit tacked on.
