Where No Man Has Gone Before
Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the crew of the Enterprise investigate traces they find of a ship that disappeared a couple centuries earlier. The investigation takes the ship through a space anomaly when two members of the crew (Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell and Doctor Elizabeth Dehner) are struck down. Mitchell and Dehner recover but Mitchell seems to have gained great power.
The Enterprise was damaged in the strike that also affected Mitchell and Dehner. The Enterprise heads to Delta Vega, a nearby planet where there is an automated facility, in the hopes of finding parts to repair the ship. A landing party beams down to look for parts. Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. Dehner, and Lieutenant Commander Mitchell are among those in the group that descend to the planet's surface. Mitchell has to be sedated and does not go willingly.
Members of the landing party find the parts needed and the crew of the Enterprise fixes the ship. Mitchell learns that he is to be left behind. He objects and after most of the others have left he attempts to kill Kirk. The captain, with some help from Doctor Dehner, who has also started to gain great powers, fights back against Mitchell.
Mitchell is killed through the combined efforts of Dehner and Kirk but the Doctor dies from wounds she received.
Thoughts
I may have seen this episode before but nothing here rang any bells.
Doctor McCoy, Lt. Uhura, and Yeoman Rand are not in this episode. Chief Engineer Scott makes his first appearance in this episode although he is not referred to by name. Doctor Mark Piper is the head medical officer aboard the Enterprise in this episode. Doctor Piper does not appear in any other Star Trek episodes or movies.
Sally Kellerman played the part of Doctor Elizabeth Dehner. I know her from a number of things but most recently, but not all that recently, I saw her in Maron where she played Marc Maron's mother.
This felt similar in a way to the previous episode. I think that I would rate Charlie X a bit above this one but I'm not wild about either of them.
