The Sontaran Experiment - Part 1
The Doctor, Sarah, and Ian arrive on Earth by transmat beam. It is deserted of human life, or so they believe. Sarah and Harry go for a look around while the Doctor works on the transmat beam which needs some adjustments.
Harry falls down into a hole. Sarah goes to get the Doctor but when she gets back to where they left the Doctor he is gone. She finds his sonic screwdriver and takes it with her and heads back to where she left Harry.
The Doctor is taken captive by three men in space suits who blame him for killing one of their friends. The Doctor found their friend, dead, at the bottom of a cliff. He tries to make light of the situation but they don't care for his sense of humor.
Sarah meets Roth, another man in a space suit. He escaped from an alien who tortured him. He doesn't want to go back to his friends because he doesn't trust Vural, the leader of the team. The alien also captured Vural but let him go.
Roth helps Sarah lure his "friends" away from the Doctor and then she frees him. They go to the place where Harry fell into the hole. Harry is no longer there. The Doctor is taking a look at it when he slips and falls in. Sarah and Roth and looking down at the Doctor who is unconscious when a machine approaches and takes them captive. It takes them to the alien in the rocks, a Sontaran.
Thoughts
This is where I began with my re-watch of Dr. Who in 2020. This was the first Doctor Who story that I ever saw but I only saw the second installment the first time I saw it.
Philip Hinchcliffe (producer), Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), and Bob Baker (writer) are on the commentary track for this episode. They talk about their memories of shooting this story especially about the location, the weather, the accommodations, shooting on video, etc.
I like this story very much. It is hard for me to judge it objectively because it was my very first taste of Doctor Who.
