Doctor Who (1963) 8.02.05

The Mind of Evil - Part Five

The machine attacks one of the prisoners. It is getting ready to attack the Doctor and Jo when Mailer comes in. Mailer leaves as soon as the machine turns its focus on him. The machine teleports out of the room.

The Doctor and Jo go outside briefly but they are caught by some of the prisoners before they can make a break for it or signal to anyone what's going on inside Stangmoor.

The Master talks to Captain Yates, who is tied to a chair. The Master returns to Stangmoor after talking to Yates.

The Brigadier and Major Cosworth make plans to break into Stangmoor.

The Doctor is forced to help the Master immobilize the machine. After he's done his job the Doctor is returned to the cell where Jo is being held.

The Brigadier and a squad of soldiers from U.N.I.T. break into Stangmoor. A fire fight breaks out, once they are within the walls of the prison, between the soldiers and the prisoners.

Mailer decides that he's had enough. He gets the Doctor and Jo to go with him. They are his hostages but Jo bumps Mailer when they are walking down a flight of stairs. Mailer falls backward but quickly recovers, takes aim at the Doctor and fires his pistol.

Thoughts

Toby Hadoke (moderator), Timothy Combe (director), Barry Letts (producer), and Derek Ware (stuntman) are on the commentary track for this episode.

At one point in this episode the brigadier seems to be planning an assault on Stangmoor that involved sneaking in through a tunnel but that doesn't happen in this episode.

It was good to see U.N.I.T. in action. The Master might have played a slightly smaller role in this installment than he did in Part Four. I love the moment when the Doctor and Jo are playing checkers. This is the first episode that hasn't ended with the machine attacking someone.

This was okay. It wasn't bad it just didn't blow me away. Some the fight bits were kind of weak but it is a kid's show.
