starring Nicole Kidman
directed by Karyn Kusama
121 minutes
LAPD Detective Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) investigates a murder case that is related to a case that she worked on more than 15 years ago. Bell has been living with secrets which have wrecked a certain amount of havoc on her life. Her relationship with her husband has fallen apart. Her relationship with her daughter is even worse.
I'm not sure what else I can say about this movie. There are a lot of flashbacks. Bit by bit, pieces of the puzzle are revealed. There is a twist in the tale that I was not expecting. I think there were probably some clues that I missed that might have made me suspect what was coming.
There are a number of actors whom I recognized in this movie: Sebastian Stan, Bradley Whitford, Scoot McNairy, and Toby Huss. They, plus the ones I didn't recognize, plus Nicole Kidman all turned in excellent performances.
The production values on this film are quite high. I love the music and the way it was shot. The pacing and layering in of the flashbacks is also handled expertly.
I am very impressed with this movie. I probably should watch it again to see if there are hints and clues that I missed. I can see how it might not speak to everyone but it is better than scores on web sites like letterboxd and IMDb seem to indicate.
