Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas) hires private investigator Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) to find Kathie Moffatt (Jane Greer). She shot Whit and ran off with $40,000 of Whit's money. Jeff finds her in Acapulco. He falls for Kathie and they are getting ready to run off together to South America when Whit unexpectedly shows up in Acapulco.

Jeff lies to Whit, tells him that he couldn't find Kathie, and then Jeff and Kathie run off together. They have fun together but their relationship falls apart after she shoots and kills Fisher, Jeff's former business partner. She runs away, leaving Jeff to dispose of Fisher's body.

Policewoman Mary Ryan (Marsha Hunt) is assigned by Captain Billings (John Litel), her boss, to some undercover work. The first part of her assignment has her being placed in a prison cell with a known thief.

Intel she picks up from the thief leads her to a ring of thieves who steal jewelry from rich people. That gig leads to her losing contact with the police department and working for a larger operation that is based out of a turkey farm.

Drugstore manager Warren Quimby's (Richard Basehart) marriage to Claire (Audrey Totter) is on the rocks. She regularly goes out with other men. She leaves him and moves in with Barney Deager, one of those men, which pushes him into desperate territory. 

Warren gets another apartment and establishes himself there under the identity of Paul Sothern. He claims to be a traveling salesman and only stays in the second apartment on weekends. His plan is to kill Barney Deager and have everyone think that it is Paul Sothern that did it.

Police Officer (and general no goodnik) Webb Garwood (Van Heflin) wins over lonely housewife Susan Gilvray. He covets the success she has achieved by marrying a rich man. They start an affair which ends after he murders her husband, makes it look like an accident, and then convinces her to marry him.

Webb's plans hit a snag when on their honeymoon Susan tells him that she is pregnant, with his baby. There's no possibility of passing it off as her first husband's child because he was incapable of fathering a child.

His teammates are stunned by how much faster and more efficient it makes Cyborg. He takes down Adonis, the next supervillain they battle, singlehandedly.

Detective Sergeant Walter Brown (Charles McGraw) escorts Mrs. Neall (Marie Windsor), the wife of a deceased mob boss, from Chicago to Los Angeles so that she can provide testimony to a grand jury. They travel by train and are pursued by at least two hit men who are aboard the same train as them.

Brown flirts with Ann Sinclair (Jacqueline Sinclair), another passenger on the train who is traveling with her young son and a nanny.

Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) finds himself caught between opposing forces when he tries to work two different cases only to discover that they are interrelated. First, Moose Malloy hires Marlowe to find Velma, his girlfriend from years ago. Second, less that a day later, Lindsay Marriott hires Marlowe to help him facilitate the payment of a ransom for a stolen necklace.

Marriott turns up dead. Marlowe gets knocked out and gets caught between various parties who want the missing jade necklace. One of those parties is Helen Grayle (Claire Trevor) the rightful owner of the missing necklace, who hires him to find it but then pulls a disappearing act.
