Mary Ryan, Detective (1949)

Mary Ryan, Detective (1949)

starring Marsha Hunt, John Litel, June Vincent
directed by Abby Berlin

68 minutes

Policewoman Mary Ryan (Marsha Hunt) is assigned by Captain Billings (John Litel), her boss, to some undercover work. The first part of her assignment has her being placed in a prison cell with a known thief.

Intel she picks up from the thief leads her to a ring of thieves who steal jewelry from rich people. That gig leads to her losing contact with the police department and working for a larger operation that is based out of a turkey farm.

Everything is going relatively well until a woman (June Vincent) she once arrested breaks out of prison, recognizes Mary Ryan, and tells the owners of the turkey farm.

Thoughts

I saw this movie as part of the 2025 edition of the Noir City DC film festival.

This was a fun watch but it is far from great. It is peppered with a fair amount of humor without which the film would have been be a real chore to watch. Honestly, I was hoping for more than I got from this film but I was happy enough with what I did get.

This is the second film that I have watched this week that starred Marsha Hunt. I've seen a couple other movies in which John Litel has appeared but none that he had as prominent a role as this one.
