Star Blazers 2199 1.08

Wish Upon a Star

Abelt Desler, supreme leader of the Gamila empire who has ruled for over 100 years, gives a speech to rally the population. Among those in attendance is Hilde Shultz, daughter of Commander Schultz. She seems just as enthralled as the others in the crowd. Shultz and his family are second class Gamilans, meaning that they are not genetically Gamilan but come from one of the systems that the Gamilans have conquered.

There is some discord in the Gamilan court as various ministers argue. Some are supremely confident about the invincibility of the Gamilan forces while others take a more measured approach. Desler entertains his inner circle by allowing them to watch the Yamato deal with a new Gamilan super-weapon.

The Yamato catches it's last view of Earth from the Sirius System, 8.6 light years from Earth, before jumping to Gliese 581 System, which is a little over 20 light years from Earth.

Niimi approaches Commander Okita to talk to him about investigating one of the planets in the system. It looks like it might be suitable for human life. He tells her that the Izumo Plan has been abandoned and that they don't have the time to do as she has suggested. The Yamato is rocked by solar flares, before the conversation can continue. The nature of the solar flares seem unnatural as if the red dwarf star has been manipulated by the Gamilas.

The humans don't have much time to think about it before they are attacked by a Gamilan ship. It launches a special torpedo at the Yamato. The Yamato destroys the torpedo but that just unleashes another deadly weapon. A gas cloud emerges from the torpedo. It grows and consumes all that it can. It comes after the Yamato.

The only route to escape is to head straight for the red dwarf star. The ship gets unbearably hot. Everyone has to don their space suits. Commander Okita experiences heart problems in the middle of the battle. Doctor Sado is called to the bridge. He gives the commander a shot which helps him to get through the battle. The deadly gas cloud follows the Yamato towards the red dwarf. It is destroyed by Gliese 581. Solar flares threaten to destroy the Yamato but the ship and crew are saved thanks to the Wave Motion Gun, which is used to create a hole through the solar flares.

Commander Schultz and the Gamila ship are not as fortunate. It is destroyed by solar flares. Desler observes it all and is not disappointed by what happened. He orders that the families of Schultz and his crew are to be rewarded with honorary Gamila citizenship.

Thoughts

This one is short on character moments for the humans. There are a number of good moments for the Gamilans. This is a decent episode but not quite as deep or moving as some of the others. I will be disappointed if Hilde does not show up again at some point in the future.
