Miss Martian, Superboy, Beast Boy, and Adam Strange team up with Alana to investigate a Crolotean base in the jungle on Rann. The episode opens with the heroes fleeing from Crolotean giant robots but quickly flashes back to explain how things got to this point.
The flashback begins where the previous episode ended, with the Zeta Team arriving on Rann. Adam introduces his new friends to Sardath and Alana. Adam speaks a little bit of the local language but not enough to be truly conversant. Miss Martian shatters the language barrier by linking the Rannians and the heroes together telepathically.
The heroes compare notes with Sardath and Alana before taking off to find the hidden Crolotean base. They infiltrate the base without too much effort and set explosives to destroy the Zeta technology they find within. Two things happen that interfere with what has been a near flasless operation up to this point. First, their escape route gets cut off, and second, The Croloteans who fled Earth after being attacked by Lagoon Boy, Blue Beetle, and Robin, arrive on Rann.
The heroes fight their way out of the Crolotean base but they are pursued by Croloteans in giant mecha armor. The Croloteans overwhelm the heroes at first but they manage to evade the Croloteans in giant mecha armor. They get split up in the process. Superboy and Alana wind up in a cave. They have some time to kill and Alana is curious, so Superboy tells her about how Miss Martian wound up with Lagoon Boy because he (Superboy that is) dumped her.
Beast Boy and Miss Martian also share a moment. He calls her sis throughout the episode but it isn't until this moment that it becomes clear to me why. Beast Boy first appeared in 1.21 (Image). He is Garfield Logan, the son of the Sandra Stanyon. He got his powers from Miss Martian when he got a transfusion of blood from her, which also happened in that episode. There is a flashback to the moment when he lost his mother but there isn't much else in the way of explanation as to how he came to join Young Justice.
Miss Martian and Beast Boy are attacked and taken prisoner by the Croloteans. Superboy and Alana manage to rescue them. Superboy and Beast Boy go to town on the Crolotean base, which turns out to be a spaceship, as the Croloteans turn to leave. Miss Martian uses her telepathy to interrogate one of the Croloteans. She doesn't leave it in very good shape. Superboy is scared by the what it looks like after Miss Martian is done probing it's mind. The episode ends with Miss Martian announcing that she knows happened during the missing 16 hours.
Thoughts
Excellent episode. This is exactly what I wanted, a focused episode. I liked the little character moments. It is clear that Superboy and Miss Martian are not over one another. Alana was a welcome temporary addition to the team.
