The Sopranos 2.06

The Happy Wanderer

David Scatino (Robert Patrick), a guy Tony knew in high school, gets in trouble, first with Richie and then Tony. He borrows money from both of them with which to gamble and loses big time. He winds up owing Tony about 5 times what he owes Richie. Tony does not go easy on Scatino, whose son Eric is a classmate of Meadow.

Tony meets with Dr. Melfi a couple times. She gets on his nerves but he doesn't seem ready to give up on the therapy.

Tony learns from his uncle that Johnny, Tony's father, and he had another brother, Herculi. He died before Tony's father did. Herculi was mentally challenged. Tony shares this information when he sees her for the second time.

Tony's beef with David Scatino causes problems between himself and Richie, who wants his money back. He doesn't know that Scatino owes considerably more to Tony. It probably wouldn't make a difference even if he did. Janice puts a bug in Richie's ear which will probably help to agitate Richie's relationship with Tony. I've got a feeling Richie isn't going to be around for season 3.

Scatino sells his son's car to Tony, as a down payment on the money he needs to repay Tony. David isn't a poor man, from the look of things, but he owes Tony quite a bit of money. Tony gives the car to Meadow who is happy to have it until she realizes that it used to belong to her friend. It ends up creating a rift between herself and Eric. They were supposed to perform a duet together on stage towards the end of the episode but he storms out before it is their turn to perform.

Thoughts

This is a tough one to watch. It is, for the most part, a two-hander. The focus is squarely on Tony and David. Their relationship is very good at the beginning of the episode. Tony tries to talk him out of gambling but David is a little too driven to take that advice. It was tough watching Scatino destroy his life due to his misplaced self-confidence. It helped that the actor playing him did a not notch job.

I watched this episode out of order but it didn't really make a difference. There is nothing that I can recall that was in the next episode that spoiled anything in this one.
