Genya Tachibana and his camera man interview Chiyoko Fujiwara, an aged actress, about her career in film. It began before World War II and continued for a few decades after the war. Tachibana and his camera man are drawn into the story as Chiyoko tells them about her life and career. She met a young painter before the war. He was on the run from the police. He gave her a key that she kept for quite a while. He promised to come back and see her.

Chiyoko spent a good deal of her life trying to find the painter. She knew that the police caught him before the war but after that she did not know what happened to him. She was also plagued by a ghost that haunts her and warns her that she is cursed. Her relationships with a director and another actress also play important roles in the movie.

Thoughts

I first watched this movie in November 2005 but I haven't seen it since then. I remembered some of it but there was a lot that I forgot about. The animation is stunningly beautiful. There are a lot of transitions that happen suddenly. I remember being very moved by it the first time. I was very moved by it this time. It starts off light and gets heavier and more meaningful as the story progresses. You don't need to be be an anime fan to appreciate this movie.
