Cat People (1942)

starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Tom Conway
directed by Jacques Tourneur

Oliver Reed (Smith) meets Irena Dubrovna (Simon) at the zoo. She intrigues him. She's from Serbia. She seems luke warm towards him but she invites him in for tea. She tells him about her youth and some of the weird traditions from her village.

Oliver and Irena grow closer and it isn't long before they are getting married. Oliver's coworkers seem happy for him, even if Irena seems a bit odd. The only exception is Alice Moore (Jane Randolph). She and Oliver have been friends for a while. He talks to her about Irena and her weird stories about Serbia.

Irena gets angry when she discovers that Oliver has been talking to Alice about her. He has suggested that Irena should go see a psychiatrist. Alice is the one who suggested it. Irena goes to see Dr. Judd (Conway), the psychiatrist. He thinks she is delusional.

Alice starts to fear for her life. One night, she thinks she is being followed home. Irena is following her, just out of sight. On another occasion she gets frightened while swimming in the pool in her building, alone at night. Irena shows up that time. She acts friendly but, after she leaves, Alice finds her robe has been ripped to shreds.

Irena has told Dr. Judd that if she ever kisses Oliver she believes that she will turn into a cat and kill him. Dr. Judd wonders aloud what would happen if she kissed him. Irena does not reply.

Dr. Judd sneaks into Irena's and Oliver's apartment one night. He confronts her when she comes home. They kiss and then she attacks him. The fight is shown in silhouette and it looks like he is being attacked by a panther or other large cat.

Thoughts

Enough. I didn't love this movie. It feels very disjointed. I really didn't care for the performances. I'm sure that there is something redeeming about it but it is evading me. It is strange. I will give it that much. It just seemed like they had a beginning and ending in mind and then tried to fill in the rest.
