Justice League 2.03.A

Only A Dream - Part 1

John Dee, a convict in a prison facility that also houses supervillains, dreams of what his life could be like. He awakens to the reality of his life. He's still in prison. John assists a doctor who is testing a machine, which gives people short term ESP, on prisoners, while he awaits news about the results of his parole hearing. His life takes a turn for the worse when he first learns that he was turned down for parole and then Penny, his wife, leaves him for another man.

A riot breaks out in the prison. Many of the prisoners attempt to escape but only a few are successful. John goes to see the doctor. He acts as though he is there to help protect the doctor but instead John knocks the doctor out. He turns the machine on and allows himself to bathe in the glow of its output.

The Justice League swoops in to capture the escaped prisoners. All the escapees are supervillains with one exception, John Dee. Batman and Green Lantern team up to recapture Volcana and Firefly. Hawkgirl, Flash, Superman, and J'onn J'onzz head straight for the prison amd deal with the other three supervillains (Solomon Grundy, Copperhead, Luminus) who are trying to escape. Luminus seems to give them the most trouble.

Dee goes to visit Penny while the heroes are busy dealing with the other supervillains. He adopts the name of Doctor Destiny and invades her dreams. Her new boyfriend can't get her to wake up but she keeps screaming in her sleep.

Batman and Martian Manhunter find Penny in a hospital. Somehow they know about her connection to John Dee. The doctors have given her a sedative to keep her from screaming. The episode ends with all the heroes falling asleep as the sound of Doctor Destiny's laugh is heard.

Thoughts

Wonder Woman is not in this episode.

Solomon Grundy pulls some tricks that are straight out of the Hulk's playbook.

This episode gets really creepy, starting with the scene where Dee confronts Penny. He tranforms into a skull-faced being in front of Penny. I think that's when her screaming begins. Her reaction to his transformation is disturbing. The ending of this episode is equally creepy, despite the lack of screaming. It has a very ominous feel to it.

This story, like the last one, feels very villain centered. Doctor Destony (aka John Dee) is the main character.
