The Courage of a Flower
The Vegans plot to steal a magnetic device that is interfering with their plans to conquer the Earth.
The Magnetic Focusing Device (MFD) can create a magnetic shield around the Earth but it isn't complete yet. Professor Chibana, the director of the project that is building the MFD, needs to consult with Professor Umon before the device will be operational.
Daisuke entrances Hikaru and Goro with his guitar playing. Banta comes by and wants to fight Daisuke. He claims to be trained in karate. Daisuke doesn't respond to Banta's taunts and keeps playing his guitar. Hikaru and Goro are very disappointed with Daisuke.
The Vegans attack Mt. Tsikoba, the location of the Chibana Institute. The aliens kidnap Professor Chibana and take the MFD. The TFO is the first on the scene, as usual. Kouji tries attacking the Vegans but, as usual, they overwhelm him. Grendizer shows up in time to save Kouji but the mother ship gets away.
The Vegans install the MFD in a saucer beast. They consider imprisoning Professor Chibana but Lady Gandal instructs them to put him in the saucer beast, too.
Kouji is badly injured from the fight with the Vegans and has to be bandaged up. Goro comes to see Kouji but when he sees Daisuke in the room he goes running off. Kouji has to explain to Daisuke that Goro looks up to him and doesn't understand why Daisuke didn't stand up to Banta's bullying.
Professor Umon shows Daisuke and Kouji, who seems to have fully recovered, a device he has created. He calls it the destroying device. The professor suggests that they use it, in conjunction with the magnetic poles of the Earth. They will only be able to use it once. Kouji agrees to be a decoy.
The saucer beast lands on Earth, presumably in Japan, on a ski slope. It wrecks havoc until the TFO and Grendizer show up. The two space ships are caught by the MFD. Blaki starts to celebrate but then the heroes break free. Grendizer is ready to destroy the saucer beast when Professor warns him that Professor Chibana is in the saucer beast.
Duke Fleed changes tactics. He decides that the only hope for Professor Chibana is if Grendizer can get close enough to cut off its head. That is where Professor Chibana is located. He makes several attempts but it isn't until he thinks of the flower that he saw blossoming earlier in the episode that he figures out what to do. He burrows under the ground and comes up on the other side of the saucer beast. The saucer beast isn't fast enough to react and Grendizer cuts off its head. Professor Chibana is saved and the saucer beast explodes.
Daisuke has a chat with Goro after he gets back. He explains to Goro about the courageous flower blooming in the snowy ground. Goro apologizes. He and Daisuke are friends once again.
Thoughts
Yet another plot that has to do with science. This time it is magnetism.
Grendizer uses route 7 for just the second time. The previous time was in 1.18. Based on what I have read on a French fan site some of the other alternate exits are used eventually.
Professor Umon sweats quite a bit throughout this episode. He seems to do it when he is nervous for others. I don't remember him sweating quite so much before now.
I didn't fully understand the ploy that Duke Fleed and Kouji use to break the grip that the MFD has over them and their ships. They explained it before the fight but I couldn't figure out what their plan was. The lousy subtitles may be partly to blame for that.
