starring Gene Raymond, Wayne Morris, Elisha Cook Jr., Stafford Repp
directed by Hubert Cornfield
72 minutes
Five men rob a train carrying $10 million in gold. They get the gold off the train as planned but run into some problems while transporting it (in three separate vehicles) from Utah (where the heist took place) to California. In the end only one of the vehicles makes it to their destination.
I saw this movie as part of the Noir City DC 2024 film festival. It was the back half of a double feature. The front half was Hardly a Criminal (1949). Both are heist films.
A large portion of this movie takes place in the cabs of the large trucks that are transporting the gold.
None of the performances of the five thieves are stellar but they are all good.
Stafford Repp played Roly Adams, one of the thieves. I know him best from Batman (1966) where he played Chief O'Hara. He also had a small part in Black Tuesday (1954), which I watched earlier this week.
Elisha Cook, Jr. played Skeets Jonas, another of the thieves. He has been in a number of movies that I have seen including some that are fairly well known like The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Big Sleep (1946), and The Killing (1956).
The ending was a bit abrupt but included a call back to the beginning of the movie.
I enjoyed watching this movie but I wouldn't call it a must see film. If you like heist films and haven't seen this one before then I would recommend giving it a try.
