Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1.15

You Got to Have Luck

starring John Cassavetes, Marisa Pavan
directed by Robert Stevens

Escaped convict Sam Cobbett (John Cassavetes), forces Mary Schaffner (Marisa Pavan) to help him while her husband is in town buying groceries. He is so concerned over his own safety that he doesn't pick up on the fact that she is deaf but able to read lips. His luck runs out after he has her answer the phone when her mother calls.

Thoughts

I didn't see the twist coming. I watched the episode a second time to see how visible it was that Mary was deaf. There was one moment where it seemed like Mary probably had her back turned to Sam and yet she responded to his question. There was one moment where it seemed like she was about to tell him that she was deaf but he cut her off.

There were also moments where it was clear that she didn't hear him because he wasn't facing her. There's a moment towards the end of the episode where he ask her "What are you deaf?" when she doesn't respond to him.

On the whole I'm not crazy about this episode.  I think it might have worked better if the audience was aware that Mary was deaf from the beginning. It could have added a fair amount of suspense to the story.

Notes

This is the only episode of this show in which John Cassavetes appeared. He also appeared in episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Kraft Suspense Theatre. I've seen him a couple movies in recent years: Edge of the City (1957) and Husbands (1970).

This is the only episode of this show in which Marisa Pavan appeared. I have also seen her in an episode of Wonder Woman, 1.11 Formula 407.

Ray Teal played the part of the warden. This is the second of eight episodes of this show in which he appeared. The first one was 1.01 Revenge. He also appeared in one episode of The Twilight Zone (1959). I've seen him in at least dozen movies including several in recent years including The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)Road House (1948), and One-Eyed Jacks (1961).
