First First Contact
Captain Freeman finds out that she about to receive a promotion and a transfer to another ship. She tries to keep it a secret but Mariner overhears her talking about the transfer to Captain Sonya Gomez, of the USS Archimedes. Mariner tells first her lower decks friends and then Ransom, Shaxs, and Billups.
The senior officers don't waste any time in confronting Captain Freeman about the transfer. They are angry that she didn't tell them immediately. Mariner isn't exactly overjoyed either. The arguments over Captain Freeman's imminent departure are set aside when they see the Archimedes get badly damaged by the side effects of a unexpected solar flare. Rutherford, whose cybernetic implant is malfunctioning due to it running out of memory, comes up with a solution that involves jettisoning the outer hull.
In the end Rutherford's plan works but then Captain Freeman gets arrested by Starfleet security who accuse her of leading an attack on the Pakled home world.
Thoughts
Captain Freeman is arrested based on testimony provided by the Pakleds? Starfleet took this seriously? Come on!
Sonya Gomez first appeared in an episode of The Next Generation, 2.16 Q Who. It was the first of two episodes of that show in which she appeared. She wasn't a captain at that time. Her appearance in this episode of Lower Decks is her only appearance outside of those two appearances on TNG.
There's some foreshadowing of things to come. Rutherford remembers something that he (probably) wasn't supposed to know about his cybernetic implant. Doctor T'Ana recognizes that Tendi needs a boost in her career and promises to give it to her. Jennifer expresses an interest in Boimler.
This episode was a lot of fun but that's it for this season of Lower Decks. I will be back for Season 3 in the not too distant future but I think this is a good place for me to take a break from this show and watch some TNG.
