Ratatouille (2007)

Ratatouille (2007)

starring Patton Oswalt, Ian Holm, Lou Romano
directed by Brad Bird

111 minutes

Remy (Patton Oswalt) a rat with a refined sense of taste and smell longs to be a cook. He gets the idea from a chef he has seen on television, Gusteau. Remy, by chance, makes his way from the French countryside to Paris where he finds Gousteau's restaurant which since his death has been run by Skinner (Ian Holm), Gusteau's former sou chef.

Remy helps Alfredo Linguini (Lou Romano), the latest addition to the kitchen staff at Gusteau's restaurant, become the newest culinary star. Remy hides under Linguini's toque and directs Liguini's actions by pulling on his hair. Linguini rises ever higher after it is discovered that Gusteau was Linguini's father. Skinner is out and Linguini is in but things don't go smoothly when Linguini decides that he really doesn't need Remy.

Meanwhile, Remy reconnects with Django, his father, and Emile, his brother. They don't take seriously his culinary career, at first, but eventually they learn to appreciate Remy's talent and gather an army of rats to help him help Liguini when a famous critic comes to dine at Gusteau's.

Thoughts

This is a Pixar film, which usually means high quality, but not all Pixar films are of a comparable quality in my eyes. I know this one gets high marks from many people but it doesn't from me. I laughed several times but there were also long stretches in which I wasn't laughing or feeling much of anything from the movie. I wasn't charmed by Remy or any of the other characters. For the most part they seemed very standard for a movie of this sort.

I think that the animation, for the most part has aged quite well. I had not seen this movie prior to today but I don't think my opinion of it would have been much different if I had seen it 19 years ago when it was first released.
