Star Trek: The Next Generation 1.04

The Last Outpost

The Enterprise pursues a Ferengi ship whose crew has been accused of stealing a piece of technology from Gamma Tauri IV. The Ferengi ship fires on the Enterprise. The Enterprise is unable to return fire but the Ferengi stop shooting at them. Something immobilizes most of the Enterprises computer systems. Captain Picard is ready to surrender to the Ferengi when it becomes clear that the Ferengi are suffering from similar problem.

Picard suggests that they work together. Daimon Tarr, the captain of the Ferengi ship is suspicious of Picard and the Starfleet vessel but accepts Picard's offer. Away teams from both ships beam down to the surface to investigate what the Enterprise crew believes to be the source of the power drain. Riker leads the away team from which also includes Data, Geordi, Tasha, and Worf.

The Ferengi away team does not honor the agreement to work together and attacks the team from the Enterprise. The arguments between the two teams are set aside momentarily when Portal, the planet's guardian and a remnant of a long gone Empire, awakens. Portal attempts communication with both sides. Riker proves to be honorable, unlike his Ferengi counterpart. He talks Portal into releasing the two ships.

Thoughts

Armin Shimerman makes his first appearance as a Ferengi in this episode. He later went on to play Quark on Deep Space Nine.

This is not a great episode even though it does contain an important first: the first appearance of the Ferengi. This is the first of 15 episodes of The Next Generation in which they appeared.  I didn't expect this to be a great episode but I hoped for better than what I got.
