The Lake of the Evil Water God

Kagome, Sango, Kirara, Inuyasha, Miroku, and Shippo offer to help a village of people who are getting ready to sacrifice one of their children to an evil water god. They team up with the young son of leader of the village. He fills them in on some of the details of the situation.

Inuyasha fights the evil water god, who turns out to be a fake, while Sango and Miroku find the real water god who turns out to be a water goddess. The fake water god still has her trident. She needs it to set things right. Inuyasha and the others battle with the fake water god until they get the trident back to the water goddess.

Inuyasha 1.26

Secret of the Jewel of Four Souls Revealed

Ten days have passed. Sango is still recovering from injuries she sustained. Inuyasha is impatient. He wants to go after Naraku but only Sango knows where to find him.

Sango, feeling well enough to get out of bed, joins the others and together they explore the cave behind her village. There they learn about the about the creation of the Shikon Jewel (also known as the Jewel of Four Souls) from Tsango.

It was created by a Midoriko, a powerful priestess who lived hundreds of years before the feudal era and fought demons. Midoriko created the Shikon Jewel in the midst of a battle with a powerful demon. The petrified remains of her and the demon are still in the cave.

Inuyasha 1.25

Naraku's Insidious Plot

Naraku helps Sango, who is injured by giving her a shard of the Shikon Jewel. It doesn't heal her but it helps to distract her from the pain.

Kagome, Inuyasha, Miroku, and Shippo bury the dead villagers. They investigate the cave behind the village. It is where the Shikon Jewel was made, according to Myoga. They are trying to enter the cave, which is guarded by magic, when Sango shows up.

Sango and Inuyasha fight but she proves to be no match for him in her weakened state. Inuyasha and the others spot Naraku. They try to tell Sango not to trust Naraku but she doesn't listen until after she has collapsed from exhaustion.

Inuyasha 1.24

Enter Sango, the Demon Slayer

Sango, her father, her brother, and a few other demon slayers are tricked into fighting a spider demon. All the demon slayers are killed except Sango.

Kagome, Inuyasha, Shippo, and Miroku find the village where Sango lived. They came looking for Sango when they heard that she had a shard of the Shikon Jewel. The village was devastated the night before by a horde of demons summoned by Naraku. Kagome and the others bury the dead villagers.

Sango is recovering when she hears about what happened to her village and about a half-demon named Inuyasha. Naraku tells her that Inuyasha is the one who destroyed her village. She vows to get revenge.

Inuyasha 1.23

Kagome's Voice and Kikyo's Kiss

Kagome finds Kikyo in the forest. Kikyo binds her to a tree and then lures Inuyasha to her. Inuyasha cannot see Kagome due to Kikyo's magic. Kikyo is somewhere between life and death. She does her best to seduce Inuyasha. She wants to take him to hell with her.

Kagome finally speaks up and somehow gets through to Inuyasha. He cuts Kagome free from the tree. He doesn't realize, until she tells him, that she heard everything that transpired between him and Kikyo. She questions the nature of her relationship with Inuyasha.

Inuyasha 1.22

A Wicked Smile: Kikyo's Wandering Soul

Kagome, Inuyasha, Miroku, and Shippo move on after their battle with Naraku. They stop at a mansion where they guard the body of a dead princess from demons. They move on the next day and run into a priest who has had an encounter with Kikyo. Inuyasha takes off when he hears the news. The episode ends with Kagome finding Kikyo.

Thoughts

About half of this episode is devoted to scenes involving Kikyo. The only time that she crosses paths with Kagome or any of the others is at the end of the episode.

Inuyasha 1.21

Naraku's True Identity Unveiled

Kagome goes on a date with Hojo. He can tell she seems distracted. She can't stop thinking about Inuyasha. She ends the date early and runs back to the well.

A shard of the Shikon Jewel falls to the ground during the fight between Inuayasha and Rōyakan. Inuyasha tries to get it but he is too slow. Shippo grabs the shard and runs off, chased by three eyed wolves created by Rōyakan's roar. They chase him back to the blocked up well. He fools them momentarily and then falls in.

Kagome is down in the well in the Modern Era and tries digging her way through. She senses a shard of the Shikon Jewel. Suddenly the shard that Shippo grabbed appears before her. Inuyasha senses the arrival of Kagome. He rushes to the well. Rōyakan follows him. Inuyasha deals with him and the three eyed wolves.

Inuyasha 1.20

Despicable Villain: The Mystery of Onigumo!

Inuyasha and Miroku turn to Kaede for guidance in finding Naraku. Inuyasha is still hurting from his fight with Sesshomaru but he insists that is he well enough to deal with Naraku.

Kaede takes them to a cave where Onigumo, a badly injured man used to live. Kikyo used to bring him food. Onigumo disappeared after Inuyasha was bound to the tree and Kikyo was killed.

Kagome returns to school in the modern era. She can't stop thinking about Inuyasha and the hug he gave her. Her friends push her into accepting a date with one of their classmates. 

Inuyasha 1.19

Go Home to Your Own Time, Kagome!

The fight with Sesshomaru continues. Kagome exposes the fact that Sesshomaru's left arm is a human arm that is powered by a shard of the Shikon Jewal. Inuyasha and his half-brother continue to fight while Kagome tends to Miroku's injuries with some help from Shippo.

Inuyasha gets badly wounded but he breaks off the hand on Sesshomaru's left arm. Sesshomaru is unable to wield Tetsusaiga without the human hand because unlike Inuyasha he is not half human. Sesshomaru and Jaken leave once Sesshomaru sees that the tide has turned.

Inuyasha thanks Kagome which shocks her because it is the first time he has done that but then he pushes her down the well and back to her own time. He hugs her before doing so and takes the shards of the Shikon Jewel from her. She is ready to jump back through the well but without a portion of the Shikon Jewel she in unable to use the well as a portal.

Inuyasha 1.18

Naraku and Sesshomaru Joins Forces

Inuyasha's brother Sesshomaru crosses paths with Naraku, the demon who cursed Miroku. Sesshomaru is still missing an arm. Naraku gives him an arm that is powered by a shard of the Shikon Jewel. He also gives him a tool to help him deal with Miroku.

Sesshomaru and Jaken find Inuyasha, Kagome, Shippo, and Miroku. Inuyasha oulls out Tetsusaiga, his sword, and attacks his brother. Sesshomaru overpowers Inuyasha and takes Tetsusaiga from him. Inuyasha uses Tetsusaiga's sheath to defend himself.

Miroku tries to help by using his cursed hand. Jaken uses the hive that Naraku gave them. The insects that come out of it aren't affected by the wind tunnel created by Miroku's cursed hand. They stop his hand from functioning.

Jaken takes on Miroku and Shippo. They fall back. It doesn't look good but then Kagome joins the fight. She hits Tetsusaiga with an arrow which causes the magical sword to revert to its normal form. She threatens that the next arrow will take out Sesshomaru himself.

Inuyasha 1.17

The Cursed Ink of the Hell-Painter

An artist who has found a shard of the Shikon Jewel uses it to bring his paintings of demons to life. Miroku parts ways with Kagome, Inuyasha, and Shippo but eventually they are reunited when they find themselves fighting the demons released by the artist. 

Thoughts

This episode felt very monster-of-the-week. It doesn't seem to lead anywhere by itself. Kagome and the others find another shard of the Shikon Jewel. This one was mostly action but I didn't find the action to be all that interesting. There wasn't as much humor in this episode as there has been in some of the episodes I prefer. It also lacked in meaningful character moments. It is not one of my favorite episodes.

Inuyasha 1.16

Mystical Hand of the Amorous Monk, Miroku

Kagome, Inuyasha, and Shippo encounter Miroku, a monk who like them is searching for shards of the Shikon Jewel. He steals the shards that Kagome wears around her neck. Inuyasha tracks him down but the wind tunnel, which is kind of like a black hole, in Miroku's right hand makes him very tough to beat.

Kagome joins the fight. She collides with Miroku knocking him out. Miroku tells them about his hand and his quest after he wakes up. A curse was placed on his grandfather by a demon named Naraku. The curse was passed down to Miroku. who is still searching for Naraku.

Miroku's story reveals that Naraku is probably the one who killed Kikyo while disguised as Inuyasha. Kagome suggests that Miroku join them in their quest for the shards of the Shikon Jewel.

Inuyasha 1.15

Return of the Tragic Priestess, Kikyo

Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kaede survive the fall from the bridge. They rush to find Kagome. Kaede suspects that Urasue is going to use Kagome's soul to bring Kikyo back to life. Urasue does just that.

Kagome uses shards of the Shikon Jewel to try to prevent Urasue's magic from separating her soul from her body but it is too late. Kagome falls into a deep sleep as her soul leaves her body and reanimates Kikyo.

Kikyo attacks Inuyasha and accuses him of betraying her. He insists that he is innocent of harming her. Kikyo hits Inuyasha with an arrow that seems to kill him. Kikyo seems satisfied with Inuyasha's demise and Kagome's soul departs her body and returns to Kagome's body.

Inuyasha 1.14

Kikyo's Stolen Ashes

Urasue, a demon, steals the ashes of Kikyo. Kaede and the other villagers try to stop her but she gets away. Kagome, Inuyasha, and Shippo agree to help Kaede try and recover the ashes of Kikyo. Kagome, while they are looking for Urasue, begins to suspect that Inuyasha was in love with Kikyo.

Urasue tries to resurrect Kikyo in the hopes that she will be able to help her find a shard of the Shikon Jewel. Urasue is only partially successful. The body she creates resembles Kikyo but it is missing a soul. When Urasue sees Kagome she believes her to be the key to restoring Kikyo.

Inuyasha 1.13

The Mystery of the New Moon and the Black Haired Inuyasha

A boy asks Kagome out on a date. She says yes but soon after that she and Inuyasha go through the well and return to the feudal era. They meet a Nazuna, a teenage girl whose parents were killed by Spider Demons. Nazuna lives with a priest who seems to be friendly.

The new moon rises that night. Inuyasha turns human. His hair turns black and he loses all vestiges of his demonic ancestry. He explains to Kagome that this happens on a regular basis.

Inuyasha 1.12

The Soul Piper and the Mischievous Little Soul

Kagome encounters the spirit of Mayu, a dead girl, in the modern era. Mayu died in a fire that almost killed her younger brother. He has been in a coma ever since. Mayu bears a grudge against her mother and tries to kill her brother, more than once.

Kagome tries to talk some sense into Mayu but the girl won't listen. Inuyasha warns Kagome that Mayu is in danger of being dragged down to Hell by a spirit known as the Soul Piper. Kagome renews her efforts to get through to Mayu but it isn't until after the Soul Piper tries to drag Mayu away that she listens.

Inuyasha 1.11

The Terror of the Ancient Noh Mask

Kagome returns to her home in the modern era because she fears that she has missed too much school. Inuyasha tries to prevent her from jumping through the well but she uses the sit spell to stop him.

Kagome discovers, once she returns to school, that her mother has made up all sorts of excuses for why Kagome has not been to school recently, all of which have to do health problems. 

An ancient Noh mask which possesses a shard of the Shikon Jewel starts to wreck havoc in the modern era. It is drawn to the shards of the Shikon Jewel that Kagome possesses. All seems lost until Inuyasha comes through the well and kills the spirit animating the Noh mask. 

Inuyasha 1.10

Phantom Showdown:: The Thunder Brothers vs. Tetsusaiga

The fight cnntinues between Inuyasha (armed with Tetsusaiga and Hiten and Manten, the Thunder Brothers. Manten has Kagome but Shippo distracts him and she knocks him for a loop. It isn't long before Manten recaptures her.

Hiten and Inuyasha fight. Inuyasha surprises Hiten by killing Manten. Hiten goes berserk. Inuyasha gets separated from Tetsusaiga. Hiten is bearing down on him when Myōga points out that the sheath can be used defensively. Inuyasha defends against Hiten's attack and eventually gets his sword back. Kagome and Shippo looks as thought they have been killed. Inuyasha goes beserk and finishes off Hiten.

Inuyasha 1.09

Enter Shippo... Plus, the Amazing Thunder Brothers!

Shippo, a young fox demon who looks like a child tries to take the shards of the Shikon Jewel from Kagome and Inuyasha. His first attempt is unsuccessful but he manages to get his hands on them and trap Inuyasha with a spell. Kagome goes after Shippo. She catches up to him just as he runs into Manten, one of the Thunder Brothers, who have already found a few shards and are looking for more of them.

Kagome and Shippo try to escape from Manten, Shippo gets away but Kagome is captured. Manten takes her back to his lair. He is getting ready to boil her when Hiten, the other Thunder Brother, shows up. Hiten seems uninterested in Kagome until he learns that she knows where there are more shards of the Shikon Jewel. She also claims that Inuyasha is her lover.

Shippo finds Inuyasha and convinces him that they need to find Kagome. They are out looking for her when the Thunder Brothers strike.

Inuyasha 1.08

The Toad Who Would Be Prince

Kagome and Inuyasha meet Amari Nobunaga, a young man who is desperate to save Princess Tsuyu, for whom he has strong feelings. They discover that a 300-year-old toad demon holds the princess prisoner. The demon also has one of the shards of the Shikon Jewel.

Kagome, Inuyasha, and Amari sneak into the home where the toad demon holds Princess Tsuyu. The toad demon has merged with the husband of the princess. Inuyasha is ready to kill the demon but  Kagome orders him to stop because killing the demon will also kill Tsuyu's husband.

Kagome learns from Myōga that by using fire she can  drive the demon out of the husband of Princess Tsuyu. Kagome, using a candle and a bottle hairspray that she brought from her own time, hits the demon with a spray of flames that drives it out of the prince's body. Inuyasha quickly separates the demon from the shard of the Shikon Jewel.
